Only down to 16.8C here at 7:22 this morn - dull and overcast. :(

Interesting report in the Otago Daily Times this morn...
Taieri bakes in record November high
Temperatures soared on the Taieri yesterday, with the temperature at Dunedin airport reaching a record November high of 30.5degC at 1pm. ...
MetService forecaster Sarah Sparks said the Taieri's weather was a result of a northwesterly air flow. "You're in a really warm pocket of air at the moment."
A northeasterly wind meant Dunedin's temperature only reached a high of 21degC. ...
Hmm... the current Nov record for Dunedin Aero is 31.0C, set on Nov 15, last year.
(Musselburgh's record is 31.3C set on Nov 3, 1987)

Very little in the way of sunshine for Auckland lately, looks like a change in weather pattern next week, warmer and humid for the North, hopefully some sunshine in the mix.

Currently muggy 18C dewpoints, mizzel.

Suprise suprise another grey day in Auckland. Makes working outside easier so I'm not complaining really.
The GFS has been running with some instability over the East Cape region for the last few days but I find it hard to take modeled instability seriously when the 500mb temps are around -10C. We can certainly get the thunderstorms over the upper North Island with 500mb temps -13C but for anything warmer it is such a struggle.

Morning, well another humid, dull boring grey overcast day out ~ though the wind is nice and helps keep the heat down a tad bit, currently 25.5 C out - take care.

Sun's breaking through here now - DP was 19C but dropping - 21.3C and rising

Also thanks tunster - yes, new record for Dunedin Aero yesterday by just 0.1C.
I think Kawerau has reached at least 32.0C in Nov before - not sure what their record would be though.

LOL, I think there might just be something wrong with this image ;)

It just seems odd that the larger area is high risk and the smaller area inside the high risk area is low risk... But then what do I know?

The whole larger area is high risk for normal thunderstorms, with the smaller area indicated having an additional low risk that any thunderstorm which occurs may be severe ;)

Reached 21º here today, falling short of the 23 forecast.

Not sure about that? I think you must mean Kawerau, which is a fair way inland and SW of Whakatane. MetService had 26C for Whakatane at 4pm, although Tauranga Aero apparently got to 29C today, so possible earlier on I guess. Don't have complete records for Whakatane, but it did reach 29.7C on Nov 24, 1997 and Whakatane Aero recorded 30.5C on Nov 24, 1997.

Hey Nev - MetService told us both Whakatane and Kawerau reached 32 today.
These are direct from M/S: http://www.weatherwatch.co.nz/content/t ... s32deg-bop

Cheers!

I clicked on Whakatane earlier and the 4PM observation said 30C, with NW wind at 15km/h. 1010hPa, 47% RH.

Kind of eerie the stats you post....November 24th......strong El Nino......followed by legendarily hot summer?

Wellington probably will be close to 160 sunshine hours by the end of today. Still then need 50 hours in the next 6 days to be close to average. Earlier in the month that would not have worried me! And if things go to plan tomorrow, we could rack up 10+ hours....
