Re: General November Weather
Thanks Brian for the explanation. Quick Q, does the buildup of cloud chch is currently experiencing in someway related to the Nor Wester? I don't know much (still learning) but am I close when I assume that the warm North West air is being pushed over top of the colder NE wind as it heads toward Christchurch, and this convection is what is causing the cloud layer (kind of like a miniature version of a warm front? Or am I way off.. ?

Re: General November Weather
The high cloud is now thickening even more to the west, however it did break up before to reveal some sunny intervals pushing the temperature to 20C briefly now back to 18C.
This sorta thickening high cloud often brings patchy spots of rain with it through the form of Virga clouds in the upper level, but the NE isnt as keen as it was before however.
The breezy wind we have is actually now S-SE which is interesting, and can be a sign that a warmer wind is on the way.

Re: General November Weather
Perhaps the chilling of surface air this morning and lack of surface heating today has generally kept the NW out. 2C at Chch Airport early in the day with high cloud cover quickly developing, warmer NW flows over the top of the cooler surface layer, just a guess

Re: General November Weather
I wouldnt think so in a NW flow
would be either spill over rain or rain blown over

Re: General November Weather
Its a glitch with the radar it always does that, just like it does simular through cook strait.
A very breezy NW here now, and the sky looks abit EOTWAWKI this evening with lots of Mamatus clouds and virga swirling etc.
By the way EOTWAWKI means, end of the world as we know it ( yes i did see 2012 last night ) .

Re: General November Weather
I thought Mamatus clouds usually only occurred on the underside of thunderstorm anvils, do they also occur elsewhere?
It's so frustrating because from my house I can see the edge of the clouds off to the North West, it looks really nice and sunny over there, grr !!!

Dont you spend hours pulling the cord constantly because the grass is wet and too long then it breaks or pushing the push mower up hill empting the catcher every strip you mow.

Re: General November Weather
Interesting?
Blowing a gale here from the NW and according to Jeff Northcote's weather station in Hillmorten, there is only a light SE blowing?

Try lifting your view beyond puny NZ's shores and read this (just in case you thought the globe was sharing NZ's cold October and not very warm YTD):fairskies wrote:Mm, Global warming my ar..
Show me evidence of it and I'll show you a cold summers day.

Re: General November Weather
Great sunset photos. The NW arch looked impressive on sat pic.
Looking ahead to Wednesdays trough, if the frontal cloud band can clear the North Island quickly enough then we may see some thunderstorms develop over central and western North Island due to afternoon heating. Timing is the issue, the frontal high cloud has to move off and the upper trough move in.

Re: General November Weather
The modelling (gfs/ukmet) has weakened the upper trough crossing the NI Wednesday. 500mb temps have warmed quite a bit in the 12Z run.
Looks like we will get just a little bit of rain from this system here in Auckland, like we had yesterday.

Re: General November Weather
Between 6.30 and 7.00 this morning, down at work, about 10km south of Invercargill we had a fairly furious storm, lightning struck closely and blew out the lights in the back freezers, the thunder was so loud you could see the outside roof move, then it hailed pretty hard for 10mins, leaving the ground white.
And the best part was, that we were waiting to load a 40 foot container so we could just sit back and watch!

Re: General November Weather
More unstable looking that yesterday, but the unstableness more so to dissipation rather than building, sadly
Lots of unstable CU around, westerly this morning southerly then afternoon, reverting back to the NE.
I will post some photos up later.
