General November Weather

November 2009 will be remembered as a very dull month in the north, the weather just couldn't clear up.

Yes, a fairly cloudy month for the N of the North Island (and some central parts of the South Island).
Just 144.4 hrs of sunshine for Akld this month, or 76% of normal. Most of the country however has had above average sunshine, particularly in the E of the North island and the S of the South Island.

Overall, I think this Nov will probably be remembered as one of the driest on record.

I agree. I lived in In'gill & Dunedin from 1951-1967, parents in In'gill from 1951-1974 before moving to Christchurch (but they had a small holiday place in Central Otago from the mid-50s to the mid-80s).

The general weather pattern doesn't seem to account for the relatively low sunshine in that central part of the South Island. A very dry month in Central Otago, going by the Explorer maps.

Here's NIWA's rather belated November 2009 Climate Summary (final?)

Have to say I'm a little dismayed at what seems to be some pretty basic errors so far.

Although Dunedin Aero did record its highest ever Nov daily T-max of 31.1C on the 23rd, it also says that Dunedin Aero recorded its highest ever Nov mean T-max of 19.0C since records began in 1947, and that it also recorded its lowest ever Nov daily T-min of -0.4C on the 16th. However, it appears that NIWA seem to have mixed up Dunedin Aero's temp records (which didn't start until Dec, 1962) with Musselburgh's (which began in 1947).

This Nov's mean T-max of 19.0C at Dunedin Aero has been exceeded several times in the past (the highest being 19.7C in 1969), as has Musselburgh's mean T-max of 17.5C (the highest being 18.6C in 1958 and 1954). And Dunedin Aero's daily T-min of -0.4C on the 16th has also been exceeded numerous times in the past (the lowest being -2.4C in 1987), as has Musselburgh's daily T-min of 2.2C (the lowest being 0.8C in 1947).

Around the BoP, this Nov's record daily T-max on the 24th included Whakatane (32.1C), Tauranga (28.6C) and Te Puke (28.8C). However, Rotorua Aero's supposed record of 27.3C (since records began in 1964) appears to have been exceeded by 27.6C recorded there on Nov 7, 1982. An earlier 'Rotorua Aero' site also recorded 27.6C in 1941, as well as 30.6C in 1940 and 31.9C in 1937.

Along with many other towns around the country, Tauranga and Rotorua have by far recorded their lowest ever Nov rainfall.
