At least the "loverly" colour hi res image put Auckland where it belongs ...under the cloud!... Those MODIS pics are really superb. At work we have several wich have been transferred to hi res prints and mounted in frames..
One of the walls in the office is full of them ... some show large snow events over the South Island and other show indidual contrails, cloud features etc ...
cheers

Hi Michael ...the image you are tring to update wont in fact..They are huge files which are processed in the USA somewhere then put onto the web site ..If you subscibe even higher resolution becomes available. There are two satellites in the series that produce similar images.. and pass over nz twice a day... They are visible pics so expect nothing at nightime.

I had a bit of fun today going through the MODIS website, looking at the archive pictures of my only 2 storm chases in January and the pics are pretty cool !

On the 3rd of January the cell was huge and beautifully captured by Aqua :
3rd_jan_aqua.jpg
And on the 18th of January we've got the cell which produced the waterspout in the morning (Terra picture) :
18th_jan_terra.jpg
And the 3 cells which stayed "still" over the western part of Christchurch for quite a while before being blown away by the SW winds (Aqua picture) :
18th_jan_aqua.jpg
If you want to know the local time for each picture, add 12 hours to the UTC time. I'm not sure if daylight saving needs to be considered or not ...
Usually Terra pictures are from the morning between 9:00 and 11:00am, and Aqua pictures are midday/afternoon from 1:00 to 4:00pm.

I reckon we can get more pictures like this if we could list some key dates for t-storms in the lower half of the South Island ! ;P :yum:
