Yep!!! still... it was a fun morning... despite having no rain here... (need rain) and the farms down towards Whangarei way need rain, they really need it.

Nev are able to explain to me what conditions causes and/or creates the fog (or is low cloud) to come in like it did suddenly today over the bay, I still find it amazing how quickly it came in the way it did... and is not something I see to often, anyway will welcome any explanation, thank you.

if it was anything like what we saw at brians place at the auckland area meet, it was probably just a very humid incoming air mass. the cloud layer essentially lowered to the surface.

I can only hope 2010 doesnt pan out like this with the "thunderstorm events"
All of this stupid cloud cover is doing my head in.......

I think this year was even worse than 2008, LOL
I may end up watching storm chasers to compensate on the lack of thunder i have been receiving.

I think im getting withdrawal symptoms

Yeah quite a let down. Drove up to Huntly and all we had was one heavy-ish shower. It's pretty disappointing that a moderate risk of severe thunderstorms doesn't even deliver a single weak thunderstorm.

Todays sounding from Whenuapai. Some good low level instability with a lifted Index of -4.1 at ob time.

I think the issue today has been a lack of surface heating with too much lower level clouds.

I drove down to Bombay early afternoon , heavy rain/ surface water Pokeno to Mercer with a line of development running across the area giving the occasional heavy shower and thunder/ lightning for a time. Current radar shows more clouds building up down that way. A lot of cloud cover so not good for photo's today.

Took this snap on the way south early afternoon.

Well... I know what and am able to identify and relate directly to what you mean with those symptoms you have described... there is a name to it you know? Could be a very wet and cool day tomorrow, I don't think we'll get 20C. GFS is forecasting 50mm for Auckland.

Tmmrw is set to be bttr than today, hopefully the cloud clears.
The only thing i can see tht will limit it is the DP.

Saw this in the Manawatu Standard tonight:

There were heavy showers that passed through Palmerston North, around this time, with a wind shift from E -> S -> W. It looks like this was when one of the surface fronts passed through.

We also had moderate thunderstorms yesterday, on the SE wind change, which passed through mid-afternoon.

Forecast for blustery easterlies tomorrow so at least I can record that

good to hear tomorrow has better potential than today. i had a hunch the early convergence would stuff our chances by blocking the sun. oh well. ya win some and ya loose some.

A frontal zone slow moving across North Auckland is forecast to become more active during the day and drift south toward AK City.

That's one of the best eyewitness tornado reports I've read for a while. Shame they didn't manage to snap a pic.

P.S. Just noticed the very last line on that story - must be a typo

Most New Zealand tornados occur in the east of the South Island, or the west of the North Island.
