Report of a 'Tornado' in Rahotu (google map), "which came in from the sea during a series of fierce westerly squalls hitting coastal Taranaki yesterday ... just before 6pm"...

Re: General December Weather
Funnily enough I was thinking the possibility of tornadoes due to the low level NNW being over run by a 50kt WNW aloft.Report of a 'Tornado' in Rahotu
You tend end up with good low level helicity in that wind pattern. I think the lack of instability put me off commenting on it.
Heavy shower here atm. I wonder whether some sea breeze interaction with the front over Northland this afternoon could trigger something thundery. A bit of a long shot but the moisture is there with 16C dp.

Re: General December Weather
You had similar to us David. We had a rate of 110mm/hr but where i am milking it was even heavier. Heaviest rain i have ever seen in my life and ive seen some bloody heavy rain in my time. Wish there was a station on that farm to see what rate it was falling at. This farm is just out of Taupiri towards Orini.

Re: General December Weather
It just wetted the ground here and some areas normally rained on were dry away from the rain.

Re: General December Weather
The cold upper trough finally starts to depart NZ today but will have a final flick at the east of the North Island with a higher risk of thunder/hail in the Gisborne region today than yesterday. A few storms also possible in the eastern BOP given the development of an onshore flow there.
A warm airmass spreads onto the country Friday with 30C temps possible in the east Friday/Saturday. And then another polar trough heads for the South Island at the weekend but thunder potential looks uncertain atm.
