As a point of reference, on the left is bluff hill in Napier about 15km away. The foothills in sunshine on the coast are about 35km away. I'd estimate that this little system is close to 50 km from my vantage point.

Very short TS yesterday around 3:30ish, about 4 rolls of thunder that I heard but was not able to go outside and view.

It appears as if a V.strong NW flow to affect much of the south island is to move on the country over the next 24-36 hours,It could be worth watching.

Thanks Raikyn, Great to see pics from near my hometown Napier I remember seeing quite a few thunderstorms come in off the Ranges there and the water tower on the hill was hit many times!
Also driving home after a family xmas holiday on the Napier Taupo road and having lightning striking the hills all around us

Re: General December Weather
Nudging 30 degrees here already...all on for a hot hot afternoon
Edit, make that 31, and its not even lunchtime!. Already blown the predicted high for the day out by 5 degrees, how high is it going? Thin high cloud about but not enough to stop the rise so far

Pretty impressive SAT loop with the cloud extending all the way from NW Aussie right through to South of NZ! Neat!

Re: General December Weather
NW sprang up in the BOI at about 1200 today, form light variables to steady 25 gusting 30kn over the water in about 30min. Enough for me to give up fishing and play in the whitecaps with the yak for a while before heading home.Michael wrote:Where is the NWer?Its been lighter than it has been but no better than WSW,the BOM chart is way off for todays forecast(yesterday).typical.

Re: General December Weather
For Canterbury folk there is still the chance of a thunderstorm Sunday afternoon. But it will come down to timing of southerly buster and amount of daytime heating ahead of it. If a storm does develop I'm thinking it will be more likely inland atm. The strong upper flow may support an isolated large hail risk.
Looks like a high settles across NZ next week. However low level convergence/moisture may lead to some afternoon showers in northern areas. The passage of an upper trough Wednesday may allow a few showers to turn thundery over the inland ranges.

Re: General December Weather
I think theyre closer to the centre of the high so it was more northerly as it was just off northland yesterday.

Re: General December Weather
Gorgeous morning here in the garden city. Was up @ the crack of dawn today and it was still and about 14 deg. Now it is up to 23 degrees with a light SW, some fair weather cumulus around but that's about all. Sposed to turn to crap later on, so make the most of it now.
