Thunder Likely

That was crazy how it looked like it would just blow on by and then it said "right, thats it, I'm going over there" and went over the city.

Bob Crowder from Cashmere reported 5.5mm in a short period of time as the thunderstorm passed over his place.
More than here, so it was possible that it unloaded more precipitation in it's eastward track as SG from Templeton recorded his 8.4mm in 25 minutes.
I haven't checked Jeff's site or any other yet.

No thunder out here near Akaroa - just some darkening clouds and spits of rain.

I went out chasing on my bicycle, no seriously! Well, you can hardly call it "chasing" but I headed out around 5;30 just after I heard the first clap of thunder. Headed west out past mcleans Island, took quite a few pics. I'll post the best ones soon.

There's nothing like cycling in heavy rain, love it !

Saw some nice towering Cu inland yesterday down towards TC, it looked like it went to Cb. I was washing my car for the first time in ages and I didn't have the heart to stop right then and go off as I knew if I did I'd never get it done!.. Not something I would typically say if storms are about but oh well.

Was at a family bbq this afternoon out near Wigram. I saw most of it forming to the west and then the eventual thunder and saw one flash. Today wasn't very photogenic from my point of view though, just one big murky cloudy.

Yesterday looked beter photographic wise but don't think there was any thunder in Canty despite the clouds, looked to be some inland from Oamaru as Spwill noted I think though? I can see the reason for the risks that were put out though, and likewise for today so good stuff.

Cheers

I took some photos today, but they weren't all that interesting, so I didn't put any up.

stupid noisy road workers!!
Got rather dark and heavy rain did set in, but sadly no lightning observed.

WELLL.... we just :-w 'happened' :-w to be coming back from our honeymoon (part 1) in Arthur's Pass and encountered thunderstorms all the way from Springfield to Christchurch! \:D/ Definitely isolated and we had on several occasions rain which I would describe as torrential (wipers on fast couldn't keep up with it!). Don't think Emma was that impressed we were pseudo-chasing on our Honeymoon return! She went shopping at Northlands :-w while I watched a cell go over Chch airport and fizzle out.

All lightning was C-C and I got one photo, will post later.

Hmm... She went shopping while you were watching, that sounds an expensive precedent, be careful to keep that in check ;)

That sure was an interesting storm last night, i could see the gust front/roll cloud coming in very quickly.
Thought i heard thunder and then another rumble confirmed it, thought it was about time to evacuate the pool and get inside.
Southerly hit wasnt strong though, but geeze did it bucket down a good 10mm atleast in about half an hour really west coast like :D :D .
It will be interesting to see what the Xmas-new year period brings us, normally its about 20th December- about 10th January where we can get plenty of storm days in a row we shall see.

Could be action tonight with the southerly change hitting warm air from the NW, 6pm rain radar showing buildup in John's 'Thunderstorm corner'.

It's such a beautiful evening here in chch, still 22 deg, wind has completely died down to nothing, still sitting outside on the deck enjoying it. It's a shame it's about to go pear shaped soon with the southerly change.
