Well theres certainly thunder just to the west of me here in central ChCh. So Morf I don't think you'll miss all the action out your way

A very steady NE feeding it too.

Just thunder here at the moment. Have had rain and thunder since 12.30pm.

Have also had a report of thunder, lightning and hail in Timaru.

Well finally some action for December, i will be headn out later on but will keep others informed via text of my where abouts etc.
That NE sure is keen which is really helping to feed the cell near or just south of Christchurch i think it is.

Still hearing the occasional rumble of thunder. Heavy shower of small hail started about 20 minutes ago which has turned to heavier rain - now starting to ease. Peak rate 88mm/h and about 10mm recorded in that time.

not much happening here yet but a some good cloud builds south of here

just had a huge heavy hail shower here in Temuka. worst hail shower i have ever seen, broke sum plastic roofing outside and also roof leaking now...

How large was the hail there ticky? Any pics?

Hail in Kirwee earlier was up to 2cm diameter.....had to put car away to avoid dented roof.

full warning is now in place. hopefully there is some good footage of the hail being taken and it is on the 6pm news

A severe thunderstorm warning im liking the sound of that \:D/ \:D/ not so for the farmers :p .

Dark to the south of Ash now!
Looks like a line of hail moving north to northeast on the radar.Off to work I go,great timing!

Hail here was about half the size of a golfball. I see the rain radar hasn't given a 2pm reading which is a bit annoying...

SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING
TOP PRIORITY FOR IMMEDIATE BROADCAST

Issued by MetService at 02:32 pm Monday 14 December 2009.
Valid until 03:22 pm Monday 14 December 2009.

This warning affects people in the following local government areas:
ASHBURTON, TIMARU and MACKENZIE.

At 02:22 pm, MetService weather radar detected severe thunderstorms near WOODBURY, GERALDINE, ORARI, ARUNDEL, OFFSHORE EAST OF TIMARU, OFFSHORE RANGITATA RIVER MOUTH and THE RANGITATA RIVER MOUTH.

These severe thunderstorms are moving towards the eastnortheast, and are expected to lie near GERALDINE, CAREW, EALING, ARUNDEL, LISMORE, OFFSHORE RANGITATA RIVER MOUTH and THE ASHBURTON RIVER MOUTH at 02:52 pm and near ASHBURTON, WINCHMORE, HINDS, LISMORE and WESTERFIELD at 03:22 pm.

These thunderstorms are expected to be accompanied by large hail.

Large hail can cause significant damage to crops, orchards, vines, glasshouses and vehicles, and make driving conditions hazardous.

Large hail associated with this storm has been reported earlier from WOODBURY.

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in force for CANTERBURY HIGH COUNTRY, CANTERBURY PLAINS and CHRISTCHURCH.

Large front just rolled in from the South, lots of rumbling thunder and cloud to cloud lightening strikes...and the wind is really picking up.
