Canterbury Thunderstorms - 14th December 2009

Unread post by NZ Thunderstorm Soc »

There, now, looks likely to be a good thunderstorms scenario for Canterbury for the Monday 14th, once, today's influential NW dies away.
I don't know where but one is likely to pop up somehwere?
If not, I'll eat my underpants

 yes i just read the MS forecast.. sounds good with a low risk for south Canterbury of severe thunderstorms with hail 20mm or more in diameter!
Depending in what time these storm might accour id be keen to chase, as i am working late at the moment.
Will have to see what happens, but will keep an eye out for much of the day when i can.

CAPE values look pretty decent (~300) and good Lifted Index as well...winds look to be variable all day but then switch to Southerly late in the day...Upper air temps not too shabby either...getting to about -30C at 500mb...hmmm, should be good...will take camera, but can't update from work, as they are cracking down on internet usage there....and it probably really isn't appropriate for me to be doing this sort of stuff from work, anyway, to be fair...

Very large TCu just to north of Oamaru now in fact appears to have some virga trailing down from it over the sea to east . I am likely to chase or assess as I can do it officially in my role as Civil Defence Emergency Management and any affects of storms on local communities in my area if they occur.

Actually that makes me wonder if there's a phone number we, storm chasers, should be aware of in case of big damages (hail, tornado) we could encouter during our chasing ?

And what do you think of that low risk alert for more severe t-storms ?

Met Service should have an 0800 number for severe weather reports. I think Ashburton is my pick today for some decent hail.

16 degrees this morning, already on the high with hardly a cloud in the sky except for some decent CU about a certain area of the hills. Should be an interesting afternoon. Variable winds no more than 5km/h hr here at the moment.
