I would say watch out Wellington. I see the dp there is currently 13C, some moisture there. The southerly buster could be interesting over the southern end of the NI late afternoon.

The 1pm rain radar looks interesting down Rakaia.

Re: Canterbury Thunderstorms - Sunday 20th Dec
Well that's it for here with the change to cooler air moving in and across at 1pm and stronger southerlies.
Temperature drop of 4C in about 20minutes.
Thunderstorm chances now look like zilch here and any development now will likely to occur will away from here.
Roll on the anticyclone
I did hear a few distant rumbles before the gust front.

Tiny bit of rain, still blowing quite nicely (making the mini wind turbine spin like crazy)

It almost looks as if the storms are moving to the East now over the city. It looked like nothing was going to happen but well its now on.

A few flashes here (more than we had last week) and some brief spells of heavy rain and partially melted hail.

Re: Canterbury Thunderstorms - Sunday 20th Dec
I took chase and ended just down at the Pegasus township and filmed where the lightning was first intially coming from which was the gust front area.
Then figured out a cell behind me was going off too, so i turned around and filmed that what a good idea as i got some good CG bolts come down and tumbling thunder.
Just heavy rain with a little bit of hail for awhile but overall being close to the action i managed to get out and chase.
I think that sneaky easterly which snuck in before the southerly is what got things firing to the north of the city.

Re: Canterbury Thunderstorms - Sunday 20th Dec
Only some brief showers out on the peninsula, but certainly alot cooler now with a gusty southerly.
