Windy in South Island 1 January

Unread post by Chris Raine »

Happy New Year

For those down in the South Island we have wind warnings for Canterbury, Otago and Southland and heavy rain for the West Coast tomorrow . For those involved in rural fire management the forecast causes concerns . Any thoughts on this potential event?

Yes, it could be. I don't think that things are really all that dry to cause any major concern though.

The country side is dry in Central Otago and upper reaches of Waitaki Valley . Some parts of central Otago have seen no rain in a month aka Lauder . Fire bans are in place in Central. Rural Fire districts are experiencing fires from old burns from 2-3 months ago reigniting on farms

So far, at the time the MS said the 130-140km winds would be starting and considering we are in one of the best wind tunnels areas in the country, its only blowing at about 40 kms....... \:D/

Drove back from Te Anau, we're getting some good gusts through Dipton way. The wind was also whipping up lose dirt/dust just before Mossburn, was quite spectacular.

It's been windy here since about 4:30pm and the cloud cover is hinting of windy conditions aloft.
I see that Paul has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for the West Coast.
Could be 10567 strikes there this evening
Shame it's not next week when I'm over there. :-s

Very strong upper winds seem to favour the spillover lightning activity. So could be a bit of a show for inland spots of the SI overnight. Interesting to see the thunder report from the south.

I hope so about Wednesday.
Wind had died down here for a while but now it has picked up again. Nice sunset.

Wind causing problems in Roxburgh, an out of control wind fed fire is burning. One house burnt and a number of people evacuated SE of the town. Helicopters fighting fire and manpower has been withdrawn due to hazardous conditions.

Nor'wester is raging here, still warm, fantastic cloud formations during sunset.

Will have to keep eye on the Alps to see if there's any lightning action...

Anyone else reporting storms inland on East side of Alps?
