16C and solid overcast here in Auckland. The stratocumulus will burn back later this morning.
I think anywhere away from western coasts will get a hot day today.

Todays Auckland sounding shows the cooling effects of the SW flow quite dramatically. The sounding forecast temperature is actually 29C but the low level onshore maritime layer prevents surface heating. Max temp at Auckland airport was 21C today.

Since the cloud cover moved over, the temperature dropped away considerably from 32C at 4:30pm to 25C now, a drop of 7C in 2 hours.

Stumbled across this this morn - sounds interesting? ...
Gisborne first place in world to greet New Year - ONE News
7:58PM Friday January 01, 2010

Gisborne was the first place in the world to herald in the New Year, with camping grounds full and thousands attending the Rhythm and Vines music festival...

Campers also had a surprise start to the New Year, a small tornado ripping through the grounds. Eyewitnesses say the tornado picked up the covers of people's tents and collected airbeds.
Don't think there was much in the way of rain there yesterday, with a cool start and light to moderate NW'ers in the morn.

I see 33 degrees in CHCH atm according to MS. 23 here with sun showers atm in Kaiteriteri. Expecting some unsettled weather here later today and then again tomorrow night. Will update when I can! Yesterday was fine with a sea breeze that turned NW later at night and 28 degrees.

The strong SW wind change came through here at 1110hrs and dropped the temperature from 31.4C to 22.2C in 40 minutes in sunny conditions without any cloud cover except for small scrap cloud.
The NW blew up again here overnight with the power going off, possibly from some trees over the lines, judging by the way it flickered just before going off.
Also lightning was spotted "way in the distance over and back of TC" when I got up for a Johnny Riddle around 4:30am
