Note: I've moved some posts relating to yesterday's North Island T-Storm's (including Photosearch's great 'Rangitoto T-Storm' pic), into a new 'More Convection, NI, 29th-31st January' thread.

Fine morning so far,so much for the low cloud and drizzle that's been forecasted for north of Banks Peninsula
Likewise here. Although now it says under CHCH rural fine and cloudy periods. Plenty of sunshine this morning with a southerly breeze.

Not here Sun beaming down but a freshening but not to fresh southerly breeze still around 15-20km.h. Around 19 degrees. Roles are reversed for once

Anyways the reason I am making this post is to comment on that fact that the Metservice site is showing 35.2mm of rain in Tauranga in the hourly update at 12pm! Thats extreme!

There has been some convective enhancement of that rain area from eastern Bay of Plenty across Waikato. Some heavy stuff in there now. Te Aroha has had 50mm so far today.

A further 15mm in Tauranga from 12pm-1pm so 50mm in 2 hours!

Update: Tauranga weather station at welcome bay has had 89mm today so far and the station is saying "heavy thunderstorm." I have been watching the station for 5 minutes and the daily rainfall has gone from 78.2mm to 88.5mm!

Nooooo stay away!! Beautiful clear blue sky day here in Chch city, getting plenty of gardening done.

The overcast cloud that comes in from the sea seemingly all the time in Christchurch is really depressing, considering that it end just south of Chch. I went out for a cycle on Friday evening; overcast and cold and miserable in Chch, yet only 15km south in Lincoln it was clear blue sky and a great evening, warm too. How can it be so cruel?

Check some of these rain stats out for Gisborne region http://www.gdc.govt.nz/sites-list/rainfall
Many of those sites have 100-200mm in last 24 hours.

Yup we've had some heavy rain here today, also the dewpoint and outdoor temp. has been only 1.1 - 1.3 deg C difference most of the day.... \:D/

I don't know how accurate my rain gage is but at a guess would say it could be slightly over reading :-$

Am open to donations of more accurate weather station equip ;)

Gee incredible difference in climate up there in Auckland and the Far north this summer (or prob any summer)compared to the frigid climate down in these parts.
Cloud clearing from the east/northeast.Looks like a fine evening coming up.
