High Risk of Thunderstorms - SI, Sunday 10 January
I see that Metservice has issued some high risks for Sunday for Canterbury @ the West Coast - small tornadoes possible on the west coast?

Re: Canty Thunderstorms 8th Jan
Yes, tomorrow could be interesting over Canterbury with some good convergence in the modeling along the southerly change. Looks like some instability develops over inland South Canterbury middle of the day and moves northward with the system during the afternoon. The negative with this set up will be the overcast cloud cover.

Re: High Risk of Thunderstorms - SI, Sunday 10 January
Nice onshore NE blowing through atm NW up high i can see but that shouldnt be to much of a worry except the cloud cover.
MS still going for high risk though so will be interesting to see what develops in the next couple of hours.

I think I'll go down Rakaia/Ashburton for a start and wait there to see what happens. I just hope rivers won't be too much of an obstacle for me ...
Unfortunately I work tonight so I'll to stop chasing around 5pm. Will keep you updated by txt.

Re: High Risk of Thunderstorms - SI, Sunday 10 January
For timing of wind changes you can look at the Aerodrome forecast (TAF) for Chrichurch Airport. Just google TAF and the code for Christchurch is NZCH. But to answer your question the TAF says 22015kts from 0300hr (4pm local). Can anyone give a rough time you would expect the front to hit Chch ?
The times on TAF's are always GMT.
