Re: Convective period, NI, 25-28th January
Awesome photos, videos and reports, covering this whole convective period!!
Found the following article in the Manawatu Standard regarding one of the thunderstorms that we had in the Manawatu, on Tuesday afternoon, of which I got a photo of a funnel cloud:
http://www.stuff.co.nz/manawatu-standar ... ing-strike
I had actually travelled down Aranui Road to try and get as close as possible to the funnel cloud. The funnel cloud disappeared up into the cloud base just west of Aranui Road and then there was a bright flash of lightning, instantly followed by an almighty clap of thunder, as mentioned by the farmer in the article. I never actually saw the lightning stroke but I did see some sort of electrical discharge, which must have been caused when the lightning hit the power lines.

Re: Convective period, NI, 25-28th January
Here are some shots of the storm crossing Te-Awamutu yesterday heading NW, classic shelf cloud associated with the storm.
It looked absolutely fantastic while it was still going
We actually got hit with a gust front before it came over top of us which would have been really good if we had a handheld anemometer.
I think Jamie might have a little more picture then me, i think i was enjoying the storm too much, LOL

I took screenshots of the Gisborne/Hawkes Bay radar from the Metservice website yesterday, an stitched it together into a gif. I thought it would turn out a bit better but oh well, here it is anyway. The time period is from 10am thru 10pm

What is more interesting is the way they were propogating & travelling to the NW (with the exception of the AKL cells)

yes the Auckland storms were interesting, convergence line travelling west, and then the main cell decided to tack SE and merge with the approaching cell from Te Awamutu which was heading NW. very strange..

Hmm, that's something I wasn't doing and must start doing, watch the general motion on the rain radar to get a feel for where it will be heading.
Maybe I should just resort to just driving and letting someone else work it out for me and just drive.
Foggy move back home again please
Oh and the wireless internet's not much help as the network coverage down Taupo way on SH5 is hopeless.
Good to see Graeme & Arthur in Tokoroa yesterday though.

Re: Convective period, NI, 25-28th January
See which way the Anils are blowing, SE earlier in the week, NW by yesterday as the upper trough moved across, also storm movement will be in the direction of cloud propogation and movment of convergence line.Hmm, that's something I wasn't doing and must start doing, watch the general motion on the rain radar to get a feel for where it will be heading
The Central Auckland convergence line moved SW yesterday afternoon, storm movement along the line was NW.

I always look at the GFS 500mb wind direction and strength to get a bearing on which direction the storm will move in and how quick.

Just need to paste the code at the end (in this case PZAWi2SaaAw), rather than the entire url.

Re: Convective period, NI, 25-28th January
My Gran lives in Rukahia very close to the Hamilton airport yet she got much more rain than the airport. she got 4 inches one night. 4 inches the next night, 2 inches the night after that. She is in her 70's and has lived in the Waikato around the Hamilton area her entire life and has never seen such heavy rain and as much lightning in her life.
I really hope metservice do one of their blog write ups on this event. it certainly was one for the record books. over the week i would have recorded over 50,000 strikes of lightning.

Wends nights storm was the most Lightning active storm I have seen in NZ and the storm at Otorohanga the night before might be the best storm I have seen in NZ, a week to rememberShe is in her 70's and has lived in the Waikato around the Hamilton area her entire life and has never seen such heavy rain and as much lightning in her life.
