Distant thunder heard in the CBD now, very dark just to the south of the CBD. Air Traffic seen diverting around the cell. Heavy rain just starting now.

At Auckland Airport, very heavy rain commenced a few minutes ago and thunder. Cell moving from east to west. Wind direction all over the show and temp has dropped 4C.

I see on the METAR windshear has been reported on final. Strangely though no mention of CB's

Ed: Its developing a nice shelf cloud now but a bit too much in the distance for me to take any good photos, my zoom doesnt go that far unfortunately.

Hmmm M/s has issued a Severe thunderstorm warning for some storms over the mid NI and yet i flick on TVNZ 7 news now to see if they would alert you to it, they dont at all!

Very strange indeed the lack of mention of the CB's, Metservice need to have a yarn with the Airways guys who do the METAR's these days. Rain eased now as the cell continues its northward passage, thunder still audible.

its a good one! observed visible convection on its southern flank, that appears to be its strongest updraft. great looking column!

A new cell has just developed and is unloading over Ramarama right now.
Oh, and some thunder from it too, beauty!

This warning affects people in the following local government areas:

At 03:15 pm, MetService weather radar detected severe thunderstorms near MARAMARUA, MANGATAWHIRI, AUCKLAND and AUCKLAND CITY.

These thunderstorms are expected to be accompanied by very heavy rain.

Thunder still rumbling over the airport and now another cell brewing southeast of Papakura drifting north-northwest on radar.
