What a protracted period of set-your-clock-to thunderstorms. I wonder if it could ever be matched again?

Nice lightning! Thunder becoming more frequent. The anvil is covering us now and it is super dark to the south. Very visually spectacular unfortunately no camera tonight

Have all those storms suddenly weakened? The warnings have gone.

no, i dont think so, the cloud tops are extremely cold, and precip is getting more intense.

edit: at least in one part of the storm.

Must be this story ?, which includes a speculative tornado report near Ohakune yesterday...
'Clean-up follows downpour' - Waikato Times
Last updated 12:20 28/01/2010

Homes flooded, roofs gave way and spouting blocked as massive lightning strikes hit the Waikato during the region's third consecutive night of spectacular storms yesterday.

There were also reports of a tornado near Ohakune which firefighters believed ripped the roof off a house near Tangiwai at 6.45pm yesterday...

The 7pm rain radar from metservice is showing a pretty large white area in the core of the cell near Hamilton, that thing must be putting out some strong stuff!

Fantastic! Best outbreak of storms for a long time with a bit of everything thrown in for good measure.
I love days like these :)
Perhaps it can hold on a touch longer for another lightshow this evening, just to the NE of the airport it looks like something is trying to get going.. nice solid crisp updraft going on :D

I chased that storm by heading out towards Raglan and ended up right in the middle of it. Big shelf cloud and epic cloud to ground forked lightning, even a few that hit the ground a couple of hundred metres away!! Most amazing thing I've ever seen. Got out of there as I felt I'd pushed my luck far enough.

I wonder how the people who live in houses under a storm like the one you describe feel Dan. I spose the have to pray that their house doesn't catch on fire. Thanks for the reports people, it has been interesting.

Tim and i as he said went for a chase. caught lots of torrential rain, some strong straight line winds, rotation in the updraft. im not talking a little bit either. the entire rain free base was spinning like a top. we also got some marble sized hail. all in all a fantastic 2 hour chase.

The storms sound very similar to those in the states during tornado season, I wonder what the lacking ingredient was for these ones to form? Lack of shear? Does anyone know?

I see that Waikato storm has weakened very quickly, an early finish today, still a small amount of activity showing up near Taupo.

Excellent reports /photos on todays storms, dont need to post any of my photos.
