Bay of Plenty Rain Radar
According to the BOP times application has been filed for a resource consent to built a rain radar on a site in the Mamaku Ranges. At just 15m height it is a non notifiable consent and they hope to have it approved promptly so the radar can be operational by mid this year!

I should add it has a look angle into the Waikato and down to the Central Plateau, a good choice! Their third.

Re: Bay of Plenty Rain Radar
Which 1 is the Mamaku ranges? a or b?
Looking at the article it might be a Dopplar Radar system for assessing storm motions etc.
Could M/S confirm please?

Re: Bay of Plenty Rain Radar
The new Bay of Plenty radar will be the same as the radar installed on Mahia Peninsula last year, so it will be a C-band dual-polarisation doppler radar. All MetService weather radar are doppler radar. The radar has been sited in Box B to provide good coverage of Waikato and Taupo as well as Bay of Plenty, so among other things that will improve the severe thunderstorm coverage in this area. The next radar after this should be Westland next year.

Re: Bay of Plenty Rain Radar
This is my own opnion.
I think a rain radar on the West Coast is more important rather than in an area that is already covered by rain radars.
...but then

Re: Bay of Plenty Rain Radar
The announcement certainly has caused some speculation as to the exact location.
Personally I wish you could have gone Hiwiroa and put the existing LMR users on the tower to the radar. Dreams are free

Re: Bay of Plenty Rain Radar
I agree John as its really the last area that has no radar coverage at all as well as being a region that experiences some of the most extreme weather, then again Dunedin has no coverage eitherNZ Thunderstorm Soc wrote:This is my own opnion.

Re: Bay of Plenty Rain Radar
I guess it has something to do with the ammount of population and business in the northern half of the North Island.
I'm not quite sure that the good old Coasters care much about more accuracy in the t-storm forecast/follow-up ...

Re: Bay of Plenty Rain Radar
It would be really good to have a radar on the coast - just so as we could see if the rain was a blanket covering or a bit showery. Then again, most of the rain coming from the west tends to be a bit blanket like

Re: Bay of Plenty Rain Radar
I think Kaitaia needs one,to catch the stuff north of the country though it would be useless this year but in winter and in NE it would be useful as the Auckland one cuts out.

Re: Bay of Plenty Rain Radar
One of the primary functions of the weather-radar is aviation safety. Hamilton Airport is arguably one of the busiest airports in the country. Currently it's right on the fringe of the Warkworth radar's 'high-res' capability and at a distance of about 180 km from that radar, precipitation would probably only be detected down to about 4.5 km above the height of the airport (assuming its view is unobstructed).

Re: Bay of Plenty Rain Radar
The radar will be close to three busy Airports, two of which have international flights. It's also close to a relatively large percentage of the population (remember Tauranga alone is larger than Dunedin, Hamilton again is larger than Tauranga). Here in Tauranga in the last 10 years we've had some significant rain events causing flooding, so it can't come quick enough for me.

Re: Bay of Plenty Rain Radar
Also, I believe Taupo airport does have the highest number of landings due to the many private and sightseeing tours and jumps flights - I bet they would welcome better weather information too. The other public entity interested in this is Environment Waikato (run off and flood/storm damage - river condition) and also Mighty River Power...

Re: Bay of Plenty Rain Radar
Remember that Rain Radar is a Govt. Funded thing (and as such the data is supposed to be free for non profit use) I for one would like to see the White Paper proscribing the funding and its criteria.
Met Service are not famous for their sharing of public funded data, but that said they also do not (As Auck Uni do) actively work at blocking people.
Population density and Airport coverage along with the commercial gain the MS can make from a Rain Radar installation probably govern the choice of coverage. (Along with the current status of the areas local MP )
There are a huge number of weather data gathering networks in NZ, MS is just one. For example if your driving down a State Highway and see a road side station about 2 m sq with all the nice gear it is probably a MS one which they operate on behalf of either Fulton Hogan or the National Roads Board. Because these are commercially sponsored/paid for the data from them is not public.
Other networks include Transpower and Telecom, yep they have there own as well as doing a deal with MS.
There is a private commercial organization which operates a fruit growers and horticulturist network of stations.
Imagine if all this weather data could be pulled together into a national data base and used to model weather predictions, ahhh the dreams

According to BOP Times the resource consent has been granted so they should have it up and running by about August

I think the one up north of Northland is on the agenda to be installed before the West coast one, Richard.

Re: Bay of Plenty Rain Radar
Was at the Fieldays today and went and had a chat to our friend Bob McDavitt. He said the BOP radar is on track to be done by August 1.
Also asked for free 7 min radar scans but no luck there haha

Re: Bay of Plenty Rain Radar
I did ask the lil cute young brunette working with him as he was too busy, It's not due until a window July to September next year.
They are only able to complete one a year.
Cape Reinga will follow Westland.
No I didn't identify where in Westland it would be.
