Looking at the 12Z gfs, it does look like the SW flow will converge with incoming SE flow over the Coromandel region this afternoon, so thats where the thunderstorms should be. And the Met Service thinking the same way.

Yes, the sunny conditions are good for the instability. Upper air cools off nicely today and the thunderstorm chances are linked to whether a convergence zone can develop, SE versus SW.

Cooler here,11c not cold though,clear as can even see enif (2nd mag star) in pegasus less than 10 degrees above the ENE horizon,normally it wouldnt be seen that altitude from here due to the clarity.

Looks like some warm days ahead with these NWers after some rather colder morning starts last week.
Although i do question Met Services temperature highs, 25C today with NE winds and 22C tomorrow with a gusty NW i dont think there's enough snow on the alps to have a cooler wind affect yet.
My location has changed, i now live in waltham christchurch so i shouldnt miss those sneaky storms that seem to skip north canterbury in a SW event.

watched a funnel cloud off to my SW from the beach (i.e water spout, but it only was reaching 1/4 way to the water)
was visible for a while
from a cloud that did not even have rain falling from it
amazing how they can form out of what is otherwise settled looking conditions
look to be some sort of boundary line

Northwestery has arrived here pushing the temperture up 8 degrees in the in the last hour was 19 at 2.40pm now its 27 degrees.

Was a warm day Andy but too much high cloud,Hurunui river needs sun before it warm enough to swim in.

no, sorry....I was on the surfboard at the time,and was still visible when I came in,but did not have the camera in the car (almost need to have one just for the car because you just never know when you will see something interesting!)

It was light SW this morning with a 'NW Arch' after a orange sunrise.
