General March Weather
I see there is some good instability showing up Tuesday for the upper NorthIsland with the passage of a trough, hopefully some rain on the way for the dry North.

Re: General March Weather
Yes looks quite good on WXSIM, will have to see how the models firm this up.
Although the GFS has been doing quite well since the NOAA upgraded the GFS version and improved its algorithms back in late 09
It was bang on when the cold front came through last week, even 4 or so days out b4 it happened!
Anyway here the most current forecast chart with the interesting section outlined.

Re: General March Weather
I agree with your comment regarding the gfs Tornado Tim, it has done well with forecasting instability this summer. GFS gets a big tick of approval from me.
The upper trough Tuesday afternoon could be interesting with 500mb temps cooling off to around -16C.

Re: General March Weather
Also of interest later this week is the possible aprroach of a low from the sub tropics, GFS had picked up on this before ECMWF.

Re: General March Weather
Nor wester day here in Chch, feels very much like October/November weather. Good NW arch formed over the plains which means the sun should finally come out very soon, and might be in for a nice sunset.

Went out for a ride last night and got a couple of nice shots of the sunset & anti-crepuscular rays
(for some reason the images have been chopped so are missing the right hand side, but you get the idea…)

Re: General March Weather
Perhaps the next photo competition we could have is a "cloud" competition, this would be interesting.

Re: General March Weather
I like the idea of a cloud photo competition Michael.
Looks like the low crossing the NI at the weekend will have some subtropical moisture with it so eastern areas should get a soaking and no doubt some heavy falls over the ranges. Shouldn't get too much precip in Auckland.

Re: General March Weather
Dosen't look very interesting for down here, though. Mind you it is March.
Cloud photo competiton sounds better than a thunderstorm one. Thunderstorms videos are much better than photo shots.

How sad! I wonder when we are ever going to get proper rain again!
I heard recently the far north had about 2 weeks of water supply left...

Re: General March Weather

Re: General March Weather
Has it been NW up in the Amuri Basin since Monday Richard?.
Because Tuesday it was NE here and SW on Wednesday morning with some cloud although a breezy SW.
Today was quite a warm one due to the fact of such light winds, breezy NW this morning turned cooler NE by afternoon when the temperature went from 27C at 1pm to 22C by 3pm.
