Probably an inversion from the heating of the cool air.

I see in Niwa climata data the average number of ground frost days for Christchurch in April is just 2, is this a fair representation for Christchurch ?

Perhaps the dewpoints are such that the cooling of the overlying air proceeds just far enough to form the fog before the sun rises.

Yea -1 over night here to, 1 degrees now and we should see a warm day here as well might even get to the mid 20's. :-) Got the fire started as we were late home last night so the house is on the cool side. :-$

Yes, a little warmer in most places than previous morns, but still some cool temps around...
Tara Hills (near Omarama) on at least -2C.
Dunedin Aero and Blenheim Aero also on at a least -1C.
And Timaru Aero and Waiouru around zero.

This will be Taumarunui's 4th consecutive morn with temps around -1C, giving Waiouru a good run for coolest North Island temps. :P

Yep, looks pretty cold around the central south this morn...

-3.6C @ Pukaki Aero (near Twizel),
-3.4C @ Ranfurly,
-3.1C @ Middlemarch
-2.7C @ Lauder
-2.5C @ Omarama/Tara Hills
-2.4C @ Clyde
-2.1C @ Manapouri Aero

Dunedin Aero with -0.7C was colder than both Queenstown (-0.6C) and Wanaka (0.0C), and I think Waiouru with -1.4C may have been the only place in the North Island to get below zero.
