Probably a weak ridge that we cant see between the low, relatively high compared to the tasman low.

MetService did predict a heavy rain fall event for the Fiordland, so it was expected.

Welcome precipitation in Oamaru 8.5mm since 0900 this morning to 1800 . Still drizzling steadily .Farmers are asking if the fire ban is over . Saying we need 40mm to get fire indices down to a safe level. See what happens tonight

And 25km away over the other side of the divide its a drought.

And that is the "drier" (Gorge/Hut) of the two Cropps (average annual rainfall to 2008 about 10525mm; Waterfall average about 11460mm). I think that 25km could be a bit understated though.

I've been working with farmers in the head of the Rakaia and around Lake Heron, who are screaming for moisture...and they aren't far from the Cropp as the crow flies- and only 10-15km from the divide.

they enjoyed good spillover this week though

Also about +0.7C at Akld and Hamilton Aeros, although NIWA's Mangere site is typically lower at less than 0.1C below normal. All the other main-centres on about +0.8C, except for Wgtn on about +0.9C. Generally a little warmer overall, especially for most of the South Island, particularly in the central south.

Going by Jeffs averages- about the last 10 years? - we are a whopping 1.5 degree above the april average for mean temp, so far, and it may go higher with the NW pattern re-establishing

Thunderstorms look possible over the west and upper North Island late Friday/early Saturday as a trough/SW change moves through. The trough brings ok moisture (dewpoints 15C) with cooling air aloft (500mb-20C). A little bit of speed shear there too with mid to upper level flow 50kts+ which will also favour cb development along the front. GFS is forecasting between 10-15mm with the front in the west.
