Re: General April Weather
I see metuv has a low passing over the south island on tuesday with good SE flow and rain behind it for the east of the island, hope it pulls off as this would be much needed rain.

Re: General April Weather
Saturday should see a southerly change in the morning bringing a period of rain or showers but clearing later in the day but Sunday should be reasonably warm with possibility of NW reaching here and low to mid 20's possible. There is the chance of a few brief spots of rain spreading from the west but nothing to speak of really. Monday into Tuesday is looking like the 24 hours that could be possibly the wettest 24hours this year at this point but this system is changing all the time so thats not for sure either and then from Tuesday afternoon winds swinging back to NE. Although the Metservice does have 7 rain symbols the actual forecast is a lot better than saying 7 days of rain in a row are on the way because half of that will just be brief stuff from the west and only chance of showers. Anyhow, 19 degrees today with a fresh NE gusting near 50km.h this afternoon. Did well at this time of year to still get to 19 with those sort of winds.Captain Salty wrote:well apparently chch is in for at least 7 days of rain in a row, from saturday

Re: General April Weather
Yes the system starting at the weekend might just signal the boot to El Nino, with a NW/SW flow becoming established over the coming weeks.
This will mean our cold blasts will be in force and bringing snow to low levels which we havnt seen this year yet.
Surly it cant have been a 50kmh NE in CHCH today, where i was working in Clarkville it was only a moderate breeze not even 30kmh and thats right near the coast.
Our late summer has been great but some much needed rain will also be welcome

Re: General April Weather
Southern CHCH along the port hills does get stronger sea breezes than where you were though Jase, even here where i was today was a probably about a 20 km NE,which is not a common wind.

Re: General April Weather
I actually sympathise with the poor metservice trying to predict Chch temps. One failed NE or an unexpected NW push into town and their forecast maximus are fried. It seems to happen regulalry. Today is case in point, 21 forecast this morning which seemed a long way off first thing this morning. But its just hit 26 on an absolute pearler of an afternoon- and seems to still be rising

Re: General April Weather
Both ChCh airport and Jeffs have been up to 26 this afternoon between 2-3pm. 4pm 24.4 at jeffs- also in Hoon Hay. Given airport / metservice readings I think yours might be out Lacertae?

Re: General April Weather
I've noticed that since I've moved to Hoon Hay, my outside temperature reading isn't accurate anymore. But of that much ...
I need to find a better spot in the garden for the sensor.

Re: General April Weather
What an excellent day again today, you could tell it was light NW inland somewhere but light winds all day.
Did anyone notice the mid level cloud hanging around to the W-SW, thats actually high cloud but couldnt develope out because the winds were light at all levels.
26C out this way too, just seems to me the seasons are shifting forward now.

Re: General April Weather
I dont think people in Invercargill will agree with thatjust seems to me the seasons are shifting forward now
while Canty and inland Otago has been getting warm NW winds, southland has been wet and cool (13C) with more westerlies instead

Re: General April Weather
Its the fact of the westerlies, probably if N.Z straddled 44-56 S ie 10° poleward, january in chch probably been warmer due to westerlies which would have prevailed rather than the anticyclonic southerlies Vs subtropic lows to the east,of course by now it be wintery.

Re: General April Weather
Agreed, but I have to say for April we've only had one really wintery day, has not been cold that I can recall, then again it hasn't been warm. Seems like by now we should have had at least some snow on the Takitimu mountains, nothing on them.Manukau heads observer wrote:I dont think people in Invercargill will agree with thatjust seems to me the seasons are shifting forward now

Re: General April Weather
I love the way M/S have worded the Weather Outlook:
Fancy the North West wind to be "disturbed " LOLA disturbed northwest flow is forecast to cover the South Island during much of the period.
