Re: I See
Delta has commenced flights LAX to AKL return daily. Note the seat pitch is tight, this could be good news for prices going forward.

Re: I See
I see that there is a little pub for sale in a paddock on the left as you drive out of Geraldine heading for Fairlie.
I took a photo of it as I was out looking for instability forms in the cloud on Tuesday.
$55000 they are asking for it.
Maybe the Mayor of Wellington might be interested in it ?

I see there are now 'heat alerts' https://www.1news.co.nz/2023/12/20/temp ... rts-of-nz/
for what seem to me to be ordinary summer temperatures for this part of the world, not even in the 90s Fahrenheit

I see that MS said "Very Hot temperatures" for Ashburton today.Orion wrote: ↑Wed 20/12/2023 20:51 I see there are now 'heat alerts' https://www.1news.co.nz/2023/12/20/temp ... rts-of-nz/

To me very hot would be about 40C not 31C.

However I'm sure they would have sought shade and looked after their friends afterwards

Re: I See
I see, I saw over the weekend, a display of photos from the Ashburton Guardian from 1974 at the Ashburton Museum.
Noted with interest, snow in Mount Somers township June 17th that year;
flooded streets September 5th;
also someone kayaking in a flooded Chalmers Avenue, December 7th;
and - striking to see - the usual flow of the Ashburton River back then;
I walked across the Ashburton River Bridge daily for several years in the 1980s, I remember what the river used to be like.
Visiting the display of photos recommended

Re: I See
I see, well I was going to see Twisters at the local Geraldine Picture Theatre today but I changed my mind as it gave a poor review in yesterday's Timaru Herald and apparently it contained a scene of calf roping at a rodeo which is not very nice.

Re: I See
I see, I believe I saw, a NZ Brown Creeper
https://nzbirdsonline.org.nz/species/brown-creeper
while walking along my street this afternoon.
Its softly fluttering flight made me think it was a bird of the forest rather than the town; it stayed close - several feet away by the footpath - for a few seconds instead of instant takeoff which again made me think it was a confiding forest bird.
Colours reminded me of a hen chaffinch but it was smaller and more finely-built, am sure it didn't have the seed-crushing beak.
Forest birds do come into town when bad weather's about; there is parkland with large trees plus further open land nearby.
While I'm mentioning birds, heard a Little Owl calling the other night.

Re: I See
I see, I saw, and highly recommend, the film Maurice and I currently screening in cinemas around New Zealand.
I learned so much about the history and styles of our buildings, the intentions of those who designed them, the talent and craft of the designers, the effect of the Canterbury earthquakes and the subsequent clearances in the cityscape, and the legacy for the future.
One of the most important films about New Zealand that I've seen, and it was scarcely halfway through before I knew I would have to see it again.
Wonderful soundtrack and vignettes of history.
A rare 10/10 from me.
I've seen it twice and intend to watch a third time.

I see RNZ has an 18 minute interview with Michael Barker this morning, whose parents started Barker's in Geraldine in 1969 and now employs 10% of the town's population.

Re: I See
I tried to get a Devonshire tea in the cafe there. Despite explaining what it was, it seemed too hard & I went elsewhere... Mind you, they were run off their feet from tour buses. And... in saying that, there is more than one Barkers product gracing the refrigerator & pantry here.Nev wrote: ↑Mon 04/11/2024 13:01 I see RNZ has an 18 minute interview with Michael Barker this morning, whose parents started Barker's in Geraldine in 1969 and now employs 10% of the town's population.

I see, I saw, the 1889 Shand Mason Vertical Type II Steamer 'Pride of Ashburton' fired up today at a display marking the 150th anniversary of the Ashburton Fire brigade - photos of it at this link, taken over the years: https://www.111emergency.co.nz/N-R/Prideofashburton.htm
Also I see that the Ashburton Aviation Museum is having a free open day tomorrow, 10am - 4pm,
per their Facebook page:

Their displays are worth seeing at any time.

I see that is was Black Friday today so I wore my back jersey to celebrate. The only thing I bought today was 2 bottles of milk from a dairy that sells milk cheaper than supermarket.
