Re: General May Weather
It was down to 7C here by midnight, if the sky stayed clear all night 3 or 4 could have been a possibility, maybe they didn't expect the cloud to come in this early. Overcast this morning.NZstorm wrote:Looks like the Met Service prediction of 3C for Auckland didn't materialise, not that we thought it would. Grey Lynn min was 7.2C. Re: General May Weather
depends on how tight centered the low will end up over the taranaki area ...and how much a secondary low that will form near east cape will steal the show...
I would say we will get gusts to 100kmh easy enough in the NW and westerly flow

There needs to be a polar airmass in place to get 3C in Auckland in May.It was down to 7C here by midnight, if the sky stayed clear all night 3 or 4 could have been a possibility, maybe they didn't expect the cloud to come in this early. Overcast this morning.

Re: General May Weather
Sun peeked out for a few sec's then disappeared behind the clouds - still a grey cast day out there - slight wind - feels warmish, though I put it down to the low cloud keeping the warmth from the ground from rising - currently 18 C out .

ECMWF brings in yet another wet system from the NorthTasman for early June, GFS is now in agreement but it is still a long way out. We seem to be having a good run of these Central/North Tasman Lows.

Re: General May Weather
Latest run of the gfs suggests snow possibilties over the country later in the week, the Volcanic Plateau included. Not sure we should look at the details too closely yet though as there will be a lot of variability in the modeling over the next few days given complex set up.

Re: General May Weather
Morning, currently 12 C out - the air's abit nippy out today - quite a contrast from yesterday - have had a few brief squally showers move through here - pity, there may possibly be no lightning or thunder up here, still - Taranaki and Raglan northwards are looking good later for activity.
Severe Thunderstorm Outlook
Valid to: 12:00am Wednesday 26 May 2010
Issued at: 9:02am Tuesday 25 May 2010
Showers are expected to continue in western areas of the North Island from Taranaki northwards. A small but fairly deep low in the eastern Tasman Sea is forecast to pass near New Plymouth in the early evening and lie over the central North Island at midnight. A trough on its northern side will probably trigger a few thunderstorms from Taranaki northwards in the late afternoon and cross the Bay of Plenty in the evening. Expect brief heavy rain and small hail with any thunderstorms. From about Raglan northwards there is also the likelihood of gusts to about 110 km/h and possibly one or two small tornadoes.
Elsewhere, no thunderstorms or significant convection expected.

Re: General May Weather
Looks like a bit of a squall line out to the west of Auckland/Waikato on radar, fast approaching. I can imagine there being some decent gusts with this. No lightning though. The upper air hasn't been quite cold enough to get the instability really going.

Certainly not looking forward to this event,Planes sounding like sirens which means the big blows not far away, though we were rather fortunate it didnt arrive as predicted today.

I noticed when I got home this evening that everything was wet, whereas it had been dry in the city. Weather station showed a brief downpour reaching a peak instantaneous rate of 73mm/hr around 5pm

Re: General May Weather
Been fairly dry here all day also, but had a brief little downpour at about 5:45pm that only lasted a few minutes. Rogue cell shows up quite clearly on the 6pm radar (which obviously isn't quite 6pm)...David wrote:I noticed when I got home this evening that everything was wet, whereas it had been dry in the city. Re: General May Weather
Flooding in Christchurch. Water flooding in to our house on the Heathcote River. Road almost gone and about 2 inches of river under our house and in our garage. Not surprisingly extra traffic up and down the street having a look!
