Very stormy now here in Christchurch with gale force conditions and driving rain. I see the symbol for Christchurch is now the wind symbol too.

Re: Queens Birthday weekend weather
Lol must be some disappointed people on here from chch with the snow not even coming close
Spent the weekend camping at lake sumner between arthurs and lewis pass, fine warm sat, cloudy sun, heavy rain overnight sun with the snow only making it to around 900-1000m with the lake at 500m.
Just cloud today with some blue patches and no wind so not a bad weekend in the end.
Pictures are on the phone so bad quality.

Re: Queens Birthday weekend weather
Another wet day in Oamaru. Ground is sodden and cannot absorb anymore rain thus 40mm = lots of surface flooding, closed roads and slips. Civil Defence on standby all day , rain easing now . Been windy too , 25-35 kt gusts though out day.. Temp now 6 degrees . Hopefully a break in this wet weather so the ground can dry out .

Coldest air coming tonight as the cold front moves up the South Island, which would be about Timaru area at the moment.melja wrote:Lol must be some disappointed people on here from chch with the snow not even coming close

Can see it on the sattelite maps, with the snow level dropping tonight sleet/hail look likly and into tomorrow morning atleast.
Nice photos though ive never been to lake sumner but plan on going there at some stage, wouldnt be a bad winters trip.
Rain has picked up in the last hour with some quite steady falls and strong gusty southerly winds, as i mentioned above the reason for this is the rain band sitting to the south of Christchurch today has been shunted northwards by the incoming cold surge.
Down to 6.8C now and dropping.

Re: Queens Birthday weekend weather
seems much of the rain from these shower bands has been concentrating on waikato and leaving Auckland alone...I see Matangi has 38mm from yesterday and today, only 13mm here.Tornado Tim wrote:It bucketing down here up 35mm/hr!

Re: Queens Birthday weekend weather
Showers will come after the change as convection up the coast over the rather warm sea.

Re: Queens Birthday weekend weather
Can some one tell me why there is snow in the central plateau above 600m yet south to the wairarapa doesnt seem to be even mentioned. I would have thought with a snow level of 400m in marlbourgh to 600m in taihape we would get some to about 500m???
Can someone answer this at all??

Re: Queens Birthday weekend weather
It probably a critical southerly,Ruapehu district is more exposed to the westerly in the southely, more SW there wheres Rimataka Waiarapa could have the SI sheltering it,someone else can alaborate as this is only my view.

Re: Queens Birthday weekend weather
The colder surge down over Southland at the moment may bring some low level snow flurries early tommorrow.
There was no snow lying below 500 metres in our 400k trip though the central SI today.
