Sleeting here at present, but I think I'll hold my excitement for next weekend

Some very heavy wintry showers overnight. A heavy 5-10min hail shower about half an hour ago. Just 3 degrees outside with a 50km.h SW and feels like temp of -2. Looking at radar frequent heavy wintry showers on the cards for most of the day.

Tramped into Woolshed Creek Hut behind My Somers on Sunday / Monday. This event was a fizzer there really, about 3 hours of light snow yesterday morning at the hut (elevation approx 800m) which turned back to rain in the afternoon then eased. Snowline in the area got no lower than 600m all day, too warm for anythign other than rain on the plains. Freezing levels certainly never got even close to those predicted.

Plenty of snow on the ground still from the previous weeks event though.

Hail/ sleet showers though central ChCh this morning, but nothing unusual for this time of year with a southerly. No snow on Port Hills

The prediction was for snow "lowering to 500m" during the day" on Monday, then showers to 200-300m from Monday night. If you had snow initially to 800m then saw snow to 600m during the day then its very close to what was predicted.

Definatly scatterd crop showers this morning, had some reports of good solid hail showers in town and even snow in the Hornby area not long ago.
Not hard to believe just had a shower here with some small flaky/sleet drops mixed in, just enough to notice it floating past the windows.

No snow on Port Hills
Looked closely and there was a slight dusting on Sugarloaf above about 400m.

Had a very heavy hail/sleety shower before, enough to briefly coat surfaces in ice was waiting for a clap of thunder it was that heavy.

Lightning has struck a Dash 8 Aircraft on finals over Nth Canterbury the landed without incident but caused a Local Standby at the ChCh Airport for emergency services. Many monitored commercial (PFA) or fire alarms have been set off in Kaiapoi by the strike including one at the Kaiapoi fire station.....

It keeps trying to snow here in Waddington, although rain seems to be winning right now, at 300asl we must be on the edge of the snow line today... big flakes when they fall, too.

It's snowing at Hanmer Springs.

Most of the beefy showers are coastal through Mid Canterbury, getting the odd light shower in town here.
Reports of sleet nearer the coast.

good one there Jason

cold air I reckon makes for the loudest thunder :)

the plane must be overhead at the time it was struck?

There was a plane flying over at the time, must have been the one that got hit.
Would have been about 2 seconds before the thunder clap happened, incrediable stuff the purple flash was very blinding and i managed to see part of the bolt as it zig zagged across the sky  .

Thanks for the info joecam. _b

A little OT but, gives me a chance to post this little story from a couple of weeks ago; it would appear that not all strikes on aircraft are necessarily a bad thing. ;-)

Its just as well i didnt go to the supermarket in the end, as i was thinking of grabbing something for lunch on my way home and often go to New World as its closer.
I had a big break for lunch so thought id go home for abit, just as well i didnt miss a rare event.
The supermarket is about 3 minutes drive from my house.
Just had another hail shower here with some slightly bigger stones mixed in, it has been generally sunny for a few hours though.

3C at 3pm in Kaikoura and Lower Hutt - no wonder the snow has been falling lower than forecast. Sun shining in Chch this afternoon with large areas of blue sky, but radar shows showers still about the area.
