Cold here heavy frost this morning followed by high cloud has kept it below freezing for most of the day currently only 2 degrees Timaru only on 3 degrees.

Interesting temps, still only 3C at Timaru, will be warmer higher up with the NW flow.

Mild here in Auckland, 16 to 17C this afternoon, a gentle winter here so far .

Its 11 here in ChCh, with same high cloud. Timaru/ South Canterbury is a bit closer into the main foothills, helps trap the cold on a cloudy day I think

Rather cold in West Melton today with the temperature sitting around 8C for much of the day, but late this afternoon it lept up to 11C with a bit of a wind blowing from the north.
Still 11C at the moment.

Interesting to see Timaru on 2 degrees at 6.30 tonight and Ashburton and ChCh around the 12 degree mark.
Northwest wind should push through soon in Timaru and temp will rise rapidly.
High cloud killed the frost early here this morning.

I think that South Canterbury misses a lot more of the influences of a NW flow, more so during winter is because (1) that are area is sheltered by the highest part of the South Alps down wind, and (2) Cold air is much heaver to budge, which i believe explains why my area will more often receive the NW wind change well ahead of areas in south Canterbury even with a weak but building NW flow. Its becuase my area is paralell in line with the top northern end of the Southern Alps,it simply works like a rock in a river and the flow flows around it, if that flow increases more it flows over that rock, that's when South Canterbury gets the NW.

I reackon this morning was the best frost of the last 3 days, ice on the footpath nearly went for a skate  .
Currently 13C such a mild night not bad for winter and getting closer to the shortest day.

Just went out to see what the high was today and it showed 19C, i knew it was warm :D.
Noticed something interesting today,we've had a drying NW wind since yesterday morning but because of the heavy frosts over the last week the nearby highway remained totally wet even with the sun out all today, frozen ground and warm air above.

Yeah it certainly was warm today Richard, but seemed strange how the temperature was warmer in the morning and then dropped from around lunctime from 19-16C.
Must be a near record for June 19C the high here at midday, and with the shortest day coming.

Hey smowstormwatcher, that is a very interesting observation from this morning (saturday) i.e. freezing rain falling. Is this a rare occurance in New Zealand? It happens here in the UK, usually after a frosty night with a rain band approaching from the west and not displacing the cold air at the ground before some of its rain has fallen. A couple of intances this past winter produced some real skating rinks on the roads. A widespread fall of freezing rain is somewhat rarer in the UK, but they do occur every 5 or 10 years.

We dont normally get frezzing rain here but on friday it was a cold day here and when it started raining on saterday morning it was only 1 degree. But the air above was much warmer so it fell as rain/frezzing rain rather than snow but normally most the ice we get here tends to be from rain falling late in the evening then the sky clearing and it freezing.
