Been blowing its nuts off here since around 10am.. and at 1:30pm a big coldie came over & dumped a crapload of hail on top of us, loud and long enough to wake the young fella from his nap.. scooped up a handful (of pea sized) hail for him to play with & he was like oOooo collllldddddddd.... kids are so innocent

Cold, calm, clear and frosty here. Only 7pm and down to minus one already
Could be a bit of black ice around in the morning in sheltered areas not exposed to the sun

Down to 1.5C here and still dropping, could be a good frost overnight alright.
If there was shower activity tomorrow morning it would be in the making of snow, but they are coming in later on.
Possibly a better set up for coastal Cantebury tomorrow afternoon/evening than todays, with showers hanging around for longer.
Not sure why MS think snow to 500m the air is still very cold tomorrow with the snow levels about what they were today, so i would expect sleety showers with hail again tomorrow with a gale southerly to boot.

I'd expect some scattered wintry showers, frequent for a time tomorrow evening and into Tuesday morning. The temperature continues to plummet. Now minus 1.5!

Interesting sort of night here....we get mostly clear periods with light winds, and then the occasional brief (but very gusty) shower go through

Sooner we get rid of this the better, though yet hasnt been "true" SW except in gusts, and apart from friday pm been little SW since late summer and currently more WSW (maybe why not as much wind yet)but its still its sibling as far as I am concerned, though I dont like the A.M condensation its better than the SW.mild for june 9c minimum.

Re: "antarctic blast of June 12/13th?"...
Was a nice wee front yesterday. Sugarloaf and Worsely spur had a dusting of snow down to about the road level, melted by evening.
Metservice say snow to 500m with tonights front, Blueskies say 200m. I'm inclined to run with Blueskies in light of how low it came yesterday

There's some deeper shower cloud just offshore South Canterbury to Banks Peninnsula at the moment, and has even thrown out a strike or two according to the tracker.
It has warmed up nicly after a -2C start this morning, up to 12C now might help with a hint of thundery activity when the front hits in a few hours time.

I wonder if the action is staying offshore today now?

Yeah but its going to be more onshore later on definatly and inbehind the front, Even the clouds at the moment are coming in from a southerly direction instead of SW.
Might not be until 4pm when we see our first showers.

From a north Wellington post it appears that the forecasters got last nights forecast wrong. They predicted snow down to near 200m but we only had a light shower for 10mins then that was it fine and clear with a zero degree frost this morning. They have another forecast out for more snow overnight with snow level at 500m. Just a wait and see game but looks possible??

Looking at the 2pm radar the front may have come through early and collapsed? The odd shower about town and the peninsula right now but then it looks to be clearing quickly behind it, but then as Jase says, it could change if it goes more S later. Not holding my breath though

They had a critical SW looked that way as it went WSW early in the afternoon then went SE but it went southerly and back SSW and winds dropped early in the evening.

Re: "antarctic blast of June 12/13th?"...
Precipitation missing me here inland at work, but some good gale force gusts from the southerly quarter.
Pretty sure i heard a rumble of thunder but could have been something barelling over due to the wind.
Cloud tops look reasonable with some CU passing overhead at the moment.

Some brief showers out on the peninsula this afternoon with a strengthening southerly. Snow still lying above about 500m from yesterday's falls, probably more to come.

Blueskies are certainly not sitting on the fence, latest update there suggesting snow to 200m, and lower, tonight.

Yesterday MetService's forecast was for snow gradually lowing to 500m this morn (not 200m), affecting the Rimutaka Hill Rd.Talbotm wrote:From a north Wellington post it appears that the forecasters got last nights forecast wrong. "Chain showers" are underway now, but only clipping the outer part of the Peninsula. Not southerly enough at present

Re: "antarctic blast of June 12/13th?"...
The flow does turn more tonight if you look at the forecast maps, i was expecting this sort of thing with the front anyway.
Just had a few large drops here closer to cust than anything, but certainly some instability about with scatterd CU tops going through.
Down to 10C now from 12C at 2pm, tonight will be interesting once the upper flow moves more onshore.
Reason i say that is look at the Southland radar, quite busy down there with shower activity so once the chain showers get established here could be quite an interesting night.

Dunedin today has been as wet as yesterday was dry, heavy showers since early morning, hardly let up at all, temperature dropping now down from 8C to 5C in last hour or so and a heavy hail shower passing through at the moment. Really dark and miserable out there.

Dunedin is certainly in a blind spot when comes to radar coverage,is there any talk of when the city get its own??.Ice Maiden wrote:Dunedin today has been as wet as yesterday was dry, heavy showers since early morning, hardly let up at all, temperature dropping now down from 8C to 5C in last hour or so and a heavy hail shower passing through at the moment.
