Re: Next cold spell 22 June - ?
I see Blue Skies have the snow forecast icon for us on Wednesday, think that is the first time this season that ive seen that, could be wrong though. The latest run shows hardly any, if any precipitation for Wednesday now, the run tonight needs to change for any chance of some action.

Re: Next cold spell 22 June - ?
Nice afternoon in Christchurch today with clear blue dome skies and light winds, interesting to note this morning before i started work a nice gust front was clearly visable coming in from the South at around 7am or just after.
Did anyone els see this? i was in my car at the time sitting waiting for some other workers and noticed some nice CU and roll cloud heading in fast, was quite a site with the sun coming up on the horizon.
It also delviderd some good speradic drops.. so maybe bit unstable or a little instablilty ahead of the change this morning perhaps.
cheers

Re: Next cold spell 22 June - ?
MS just put out a heavy snow warning for inland canterbury:
10 to 15cm could accumulate above 400 metres, with lighter falls down to 300
metres. This is likely to cause disruption to transport, and be stressful to
stock. The snow is likely to be followed by rain, so will probably have melted
away by the end of Wednesday.
In the 10 hours from 10pm Tuesday to 8am Wednesday, expect 10 to 15cm of snow to
accumulate above 400 metres, with lighter falls down to 300 metres.
After 8am Wednesday, the snow should ease and turn to rain.

Queenstown has dropped from 11C to 3.3C in quick time with the arrival of the Front, more snow for the skii fields.
I see the Australian skii fields have had a poor start to their season with not much snow so far, There has been a lot of High preasure over them.

Can't beleive that Jim Hickey has just told us that there will be a Low developing on this front to the East and all the snow will be above 300m, Yeah Right. The weather is not that predictable. I might regret this in the next 24 hours but I think I might go for snow to >100 m thanks.

I'm just waiting to see what happens. Mind you there is a 1040hPa anticyclone with it's associated ridging pushing in behind this cold outbreak

It is snowing heavily in the Mackenzie high country.
Hello every one! The snow has been falling very thickly for the past hour. It looked as if we would easily match the snowfall of June 2006 but the snow is easing slightly now with only 2 or 3 inches worth on the ground. If it turns to rain the snow cover will likely be gone in the morning. Of course if snow begins to fall more heavily again we could be in for quite a good dumping of it by the time the sun comes up!

Thanks for that report. Us chaps will looking forward to the snow if does fall on the plains. The SW has now arrived here and the temperature is falling so the rain turning to snow should follow with the temperatures falling.

Re: Next cold spell 22 June - ?
According to Google maps (terrain map), Fairlie is right at 300m asl....hmmm...dare I say it, you can see that low Jim Hickey was talking about possibly forming just south of BP on the most recent radar loops...?
EDIT: Geraldine (east and down the hills a bit from Fairlie) weather station showing 3C and dropping with precip...the w/s reports being at 140m asl...wouldn't be surprised if they saw snow there tonight...

Re: Next cold spell 22 June - ?
Weather stations are dropping inland now, Methvan down to 2C now from 7C an hour ago when i looked.
Ive noticed the temperature here went up obviously with the passge of the front, but is now going back down.
Might well be snowing at my work tomorrow if i can make it in.

Light rain now in central Chch, about 6C. Looks like Canterbury might get a bigger and lower snow event than MetService has been forecasting.

Still 6 degrees here in ChCh, light rain for some time now. A lot warmer than I thought it would be, not expecting much action in this neck of the woods- I think inland is the place to be

3 degrees and raining lightly here at the moment. Looks as if the band is almost passed us now, hopefully some newer development to the south.
