We always get our most persistant rain "from the south" these days.

I see that since about 3am yesterday, the Pinnacles in S'ern Coromandel is currently up to 155mm, whereas Castle Rock, a little further N, has only had 45mm.

Intermittent light rain here with 12mm since 11pm last night.

I can't see the need for a rain warning here given the current state of the rain band....maybe it is going to intensify? Just intermittent light rain so far.

The latest warning has shifted the focus from 'Takapuna southwards' to 'southern Auckland'...
Severe Weather Warnings
ISSUED BY MetService AT
9:08 am 25-Jun-2010

Periods of heavy rain for northern and eastern areas of New Zealand from Auckland to Marlborough on Friday and Saturday

A large low pressure system is expected to remain slow moving across the upper North Island today, then move over the lower North Island on Saturday and deepen. Rain in an easterly flow is expected to be heavy today about southern Auckland, the Coromandel Peninsula and Bay of Plenty west of Tauranga. From this morning (Friday) until midnight, a further 60mm to 90mm is forecast on top of rain which has alreay fallen

Overnight Friday and during Saturday the focus of heavy rain is expected to shift to eastern areas of the country from Gisborne to Marlborough as the low moves southwards and the winds strengthen and turn south to southeast. 50mm to 90mm is possible in the ranges of Gisborne, Hawkes Bay and Wairarapa, (for Gisborne and Hawkes Bay, this follows soon after a significant period of heavy rain during Thursday), While for the eastern ranges of Marlborough, 70mm to 110mm is expected to accumulate.

If you look at the detail for each region it still says Takapuna southwards. Maybe they are meaning the southern part of the greater Auckland region ;-)

The base of those clouds are very low... I went out and took another look.. and the skies above me are interesting in that I feel as those I am standing in a circle looking directly above me I see blue skies and patchy small clouds ... however there is a circle forming...

The base of those clouds are very slow moving and building in height... yet still, there is no wind... at all.

Yes, only received a brief shower here from this slow approaching rainband, the temp dropped abit, the wind picked up slightly and then as it passed over here moving ESE the skies cleared - still it looked impressive :D

I've had the misfortune to spend four hours on the roads around Auckland this morning, and yes, driving conditions are horrendous. However I was very pleasantly surprised at the GOOD driving I've witnessed today - speeds reduced, following distances extended, courteous and sensible lane changes on the motorways. Am now back in Takapuna and the rain has eased considerably.

32mm of persistent moderate rain here, and fairly cold on 11C.
Looks like it is clearing already....earlier than MS were expecting perhaps?

Hi spwill

I've just seen your pic - anyway, after my long day in hosp - we were on the harbour bridge heading back home north and I'm glad you snapped this photo because I saw it too - I was too tired to reach around and grab my camera in the back, but, I'm glad you took the pic... and pleased to know I was'nt the only person in Auckland that day looking at the skies :D
