Sounding for Whenuapai today. Shows the air airmass looking very cold and marginally unstable.

This type of sounding is good for pop corn cb's over heated land in summer.

Partly cloudy, 15C, any showers today have been very isolated.

Looks like a change in weather pattern now to a more mobile westerly type pattern, hopefully it will throw some interesting weather our way.

Had a more substantial shower just after my last post, but didn't last for long. Still cloudy out here, but no more showers.

Yer Andrew, back to the boring weather again after having a few days of moderate flooding around these parts.
Pleased to see outside as its getting dark that after a lovely mostly sunny day the cloud has come back in, hopefully to keep any frosts away.
Looks like the lower SL had a lot of the fogs again today going by the link below

the high will be extending a ridge on the NE corner of the NI
and cold air (could be drizzle even) in the center of the NI is hard to shift....they can be strong NW winds in Tarananki and wanganui but light winds in taupo no problem under those conditions

with a very very interesting lowering.
there was a shower that looked similar over the waiuku area at around 11:45am, a boundary with the new westerly airmass that came in this afternoon...

No decent wintry Polar outbreak this Autumn/Winter so far. Unusal not to have had a low level snowfall for coastal Otago/Southland by now . Much of the SouthIsland Skii field snow has come from a couple of slow moving subtropical Lows early in the winter so I reckon they have been very lucky to get away with a good season this year.

I see Hobart is heading for a record warm July...
the frosty week or so we had has meant overall July temperatures are just below average...but take away that frosty period and temperatures would have been much higher than normal
see my differences from average column here:
http://www.weather-display.com/windy/gb ... taout.html

some days we were like 4C colder than normal for that day....
but alot of the rest of the month has been above average temperatures (sea temperatures are average to above average on this side of the pacific so understandable)

Although June was about 0.3C warmer than average for the country as a whole, a check on the Climate Explorer maps shows that for the first 25 days of July the majority of the country has been between 0C and 1C below average, with some much smaller areas in the NW and west of the country up to 0.5C above, the overall result courtesy of some pretty good frosts. Most areas have been drier than average, with the more westerly parts and much of the South Island a long way below average.

By a "bad" winter I presume you mean a cold one - none of the reputable forecasters were predicting a colder than average winter, as far as I can recall. Locally as far as I'm concerned the May-June period in this area was lousy, as it was extremely wet and very cloudy. July has been a considerable improvement with more sun, but rainfall not low enough to allow much drying out.

PS - temperature averages for July so far have been around 0.5C below for Wellington, Kapiti and southern Wairarapa.
