High pressure settled period 10-14 July

Unread post by Michael »

Maybe time to focus on this, could dominate much of the coming week with an intense anticyclone with frosts in many areas though the SE periphery could have onshore winds at 1st.
Depicted here is ecmwf with strong ridging at the end of the period still.

Nice to get into a spell of fine weather. The polar airmass will reach Auckland tomorrow so this weekend could be our coldest days of the year.

-1.9C overnight here but looks as though the next 5 nights or so will be just as cold or colder.

My area of Richmond seems to consistently get about 2-3C cooler overnight than the Nelson site, though thats hardly surprising considering how close the Nelson site is to the ocean.

I notice Queenstown is forecast to drop down to -7C tonight which is the lowest I can find on the metservice map.

yea getting persistent wind gusts here which is fluctuating the temp. should be about our best frost of the year this weekend. i think nzstorm made mention to it possibly providing areas around the country with the best frosts of the year and i think he would be not far off correct there.

off to the snow again early sunday morning so going to have to be super careful for black ice with good frosts expected.

Interesting how we are getting puffs of wind every now and again from the S. Might be the difference between a frost and no frost for us here if it keeps up...go away wind

The southerly breeze has been picking up a bit here over the last couple of hours. It's dropping the Dew Point but holding the temperature at just below 7 degrees C, if it drops off the temp should fall pretty quickly.

Hmm it seems this anti cyclonic period may end by this coming Friday, models are indicating an active front coming through associated with a Low in the southern Tasman Sea.

Will have to see what happens...

Might just be a short low pressure intrusion of the anticyclonic period we may have this month?

Gentle sea breeze has developed here from the ENE, didn't think the diurnal heating in winter would be strong enough for that

I have made some water available tonight, so I could make a cup of tea tomorrow morning as the pipes could freeze here overnight as it could get to minus 5C.

This is a strange anticyclone the way the wind doesn't become absolute calm at night...as a result the temperature has started rising here :(
