Re: Tasman low 20-23rd July
Looks so dark out there yet no rain. The band is well to the SE now. According to the models it should be quite persistent rain today and gradually becoming heavier. That band must be about to turn around and intensify.

Yeah sure is dark A lull since about 8.30 here in town. Looks damned wet tonight/ tomorrow, could cause some issues. I'm surprised there isn't a full warning out yet.

Totally agree! I see they have cancelled one in the updated weather warnings. Just driving down the road before and water in paddocks is quite incredible from the additional 10-15mm weve had.Razor wrote:Yeah sure is dark A lull since about 8.30 here in town. Metservice 'watch' from last night indicated it would be reviewed by 9am this morning, so presumably something is imminent in terms of an update

Re: Tasman low 20-23rd July
Right on cue...haha
Canterbury folk will well know to look out though, we do not need the "metservice warnable threshold' to be met for significant problems right now. 20-30mm will be enough for flooding with current water tables so high
Severe Weather Watch
Valid to: 9:30am Friday 23 July 2010
SEVERE WEATHER WATCH FOR BAY OF PLENTY, CANTERBURY AND KAIKOURA
ISSUED BY METSERVICE AT 0930hrs 22-Jul-2010
HEAVY RAIN FOR THE RANGES OF BAY OF PLENTY EASING THIS AFTERNOON
A PERIOD OF HEAVY RAIN ABOUT CANTERBURY AND KAIKOURA COAST THIS
EVENING AND FRIDAY
A front is expected to move eastwards over the Bay of Plenty this
afternoon, preceded by a moist northeast flow and brief heavy rain.
It looks unlikely rainfall there will approach warning amounts.
The front is expected to become slow moving over the eastern South
Island later today, before drifting slowly northwards during Friday.
This is likely to bring a period of heavy rain to the Canterbury
foothills and to the Kaikoura Coast in a southeast flow, this evening
and Friday. Rainfall amounts may approach warning criteria in some
places.
The watch for heavy rain in northern Marlborough and the Coromandel
Peninsula is now lifted.
This Watch will be reviewed by 9PM THURSDAY 22ND JULY
Forecast prepared by: HEATH GULLERY

Re: Tasman low 20-23rd July
Was updated at 930am now and they have kept it as a watch and not a warning. Surely they should be issuing the warning now if its valid for tonight and tomorrow....Razor wrote:Metservice 'watch' from last night indicated it would be reviewed by 9am this morning, so presumably something is imminent in terms of an update
Some drizzle is picking up again.

Mild humid flow over the top of NZ with 14C dewpoints, overcast high cloud currently but any sunshine today should lead to some very mild temps

Not a bad day in Auckland, 17C with high cloud. Looks like a trough moves across tonight with a heavy shower risk.

Re: Tasman low 20-23rd July
17°C and a DP of 15°C outside atm with towering cumulus, that temp/dp is very unusual for winter!
If this continues into spring which it looks like it will because of the developing La Nina, thunderstorms would be more likely esp if we have a few sub tropic lows come our way or surface lows

Re: Tasman low 20-23rd July
This system has been a bit of a non event here so far no rain here today and only 0.5mm overnight. Air pressures to high for any heavy rain for this area still 1016hpa here for any real rain to eventuate it would need to drop at least 10-15 hpa.
