MS not far off with the 130km winds that they forecasted ,some massive gusts came through here last night, would have blown a few sparrows out of bed

Ah! That is good as to mark the 35th anniversary of the Big Blow of 1975 where most of Balmoral Forest was levelled

Re: General August Weather
Funny old day here with spots of rain all day but yet the ground wasnt wet until early afternoon. Maybe 1mm out of it! Anyhow, I know it is only August 1st but I gotta say I really dont actually think we are going to see any snow this winter here. It really seems that way and long range models show nothing either. This spring like pattern looks set to stay for the next few days anyways. I dont even remember it even looking like snowing this winter with the exception of one day where we had some sleety stuff but even then that was brief. Hopefully some more interesting weather sometime soon.

We had a fairly good blow, by Nelson standards anyway, this from the Nelson Mail website:
Still just a strong Western Australian seabreeze by my standards though.
Not that much rain either, only 18mm in total in my gauge with similar readings in several other places in Nelson burbs by the looks of things.
full article here: http://www.stuff.co.nz/nelson-mail/news ... -for-treesMetService meteorologist Ross Marsden said the strongest wind readings at Nelson Airport were at 3pm yesterday, when wind reached speeds of 32 knots, gusting to 45.

All it takes is one of these stationary lows with milder air to run into a cold southerly blast, which the situations are certainly there just the highs have been positioning themselves in the right spots to stop the cold southerly blasts from coming up and allowing the shallow lows in.CHCH Weather Chaser wrote:Funny old day here with spots of rain all day but yet the ground wasnt wet until early afternoon. A very nice sunrise this morning with a double rainbow, SW came through around 10am and cooled things down a tad with just light showers on and off all day.

Re: General August Weather
Alot wetter on outer BP; in fact really persistent rain in afternoon. However, there was a significant improvement as I came back into Chch late afternoon, with only a few spits of rain from about Birdling's Flat onwards.SW came through around 10am and cooled things down a tad with just light showers on and off all day.

But i for one am sick of the cold boring dull days this winter with not alot of action, i havent even botherd to take much notice with the weather for the past month as the long range forecasts have said nothing.
I personally would love the spring like weather pattern to continue now.. roll on the warmer months and see what storm season will bring this time round for Canterbury cant wait!!
NOTE: a nice wee clip on some lightning on tv 1 news tonight also, gives people a bit more understanding of the energy and thrill of why we chase. good stuff

No we aren't - La Nina conditions are developing. I'd love to have a "boring" couple of anticyclonic spring months as in, say, Sept-Oct 1985. Not too hopeful though.NZ Thunderstorm Soc wrote:... but we are in a El Nino period , so things don't look all that great, sadly

Yes we are. Developing conditions means that we are in a El Nino period as far as I'm concerned.

El Nîno? Which hemisphere are you in John?
This is a classic La Nîna phase, might be my first for UnZud but for my dealings with Aussie.. totally different package.

Re: General August Weather
John, the El Nino's passed on. This El Nino is no more, it has ceased to be!
It's expired and gone to meet its maker!
It's a stiff. Bereft of life, it rests in peace. If you hadn't mentioned it just now it'd be pushing up the daisies!
Its metabolic processes are now 'istory!
El Nino's off the twig!
'El Nino's kicked the bucket, it's shuffled off its mortal coil, run down the curtain and joined the bleedin' choir invisibile!! THIS IS AN EX-El NINO!!

Re: General August Weather
El Nino means SW changes/storms for Canterbury and John would never forget that!!!
The 12Z run of the gfs is coming in colder for the South Island at the weekend throwing up some snow possibilities for inland parts. Have to see how the next couple of runs go but maybe winter will have another fling!
