Here's NIWA's preliminary August 2010 National Climate Summary

'Cloudy, warm, and extremely wet'

Highest temp was 21.9°C recorded at Motueka. Lowest temp was -12.6°C recorded at Lake Tekapo.

Some fairly impressive rainfall totals. Some new August records included Te Puke (413mm), Tauranga (274mm) and Turangi (269mm). Whitianga also managed 374mm.

My records are somewhat incomplete, but a couple of nearby Waiheke sites recorded about 230mm for the month. During the night of the slips (25/26th), one recorded 71mm and the other 61.5mm.

As usual some of the rankings (or values) in the record lists are wrong, well at least one of them. Blenheim's 156 hours was 20+ below normal and the lowest since 1989 (many intervening Augusts having been rather sunny), but is nothing like the 3rd lowest - from 1947 on it's about the 9th lowest, and for all sites there (1930 on) about 14th lowest.
