Just getting some nice big sleety droplets now, down to 4.1C here and dropping.
This will be where the snow level will be at its lowest now, with the colder air on those crop showers but just showers not the moderate to steady fall we have had all day.
I am not saying it will snow to sea level but will fall close maybe down to 100m might see brief flakes epsecially by the early morning, so leighton if you want to catch some flakes skip on up the Port Hills  .
Up to a total of 39mm in my rain gauge from this event so far, would this be the wettest on record for winter? i know last winter was very wet but i think we have beaten last years already.

It's midnight and still mostly rain, although in the last half hour there have been sleety interludes and temperature is now down to 3degs.

If it's going to happen it'll be in the next hour I'd say, and we'll need a lot more precip for it to be much of an event!

1am: rain has stopped for last hour, no snow, 2.5degs.

Snow settling down to as low as about 400m out here near Akaroa, as frequent showers (some with small hail) continue. Often very strong, gusty southerly wind.

Some heavy sleety showers falling this morning. Overnight another 8mm with some graupel/hail showers that woke me up. Radar shows shower activity picking up again just south of the city and should move on through the city for most of today.

I can appreciate the frustrations of those of you who live on the coast with regard to whether it will rain or snow. Having spent my youth on the south coast of England, we often received rain/sleet/wet snow right on the coast, and I couldnt understand what had gone wrong when the local evening news would carry pictures of cars sliding about in the snow in Salisbury + Winchester, which are only 30 miles inland and at 100-150m amsl. C'est la vie.

You can imagine how frustrating it was sitting here at 300asl with torrential rain and snow falling 20km up the road!!

Oh well, rumours are we're in for another low next weekend so I may still get some white stuff this year.... I still dream of dumps as big as the 2006 one that had us snowed in for 3 days with no power (and yes, my mates think I'm mad! o_O )

Looks to be a mild weekend next weekend with northerlies. Anyways I think that may be it for the showers now. Radar shows them disappearing and very little - if any left around the city on the detector. Only stuff is south of the peninsular but they will move out to the east.

haha! well i think alot of people might think we are mad MoorfNZ  its all the fun of being a weather enthuiest and chaser! _b

Anyways at long last a little exciting weather, hail/sleet also woke me up in the early hours to leighton with that cold air, few heavy sleet showers also thought they would take a route through the city around 10am
Be interesting to see what happens next weekend.

Got back from Moonshine/Upper Hutt today and found an incredible 62.2mm in the rain-gauge, here
This must of been the rain on Sat or Sunday and early this morning as I only went up there on Friday afternoon. :-o
It must of been a wet day down here yesterday. 8-o

Not much in the way of precipitation up at work today, just mainly dry with cloudy periods and a strong cold southerly.
Snow level was visable on the plains down to about 400m with a smaller dusting slightly lower down.
47mm to total from this low system.
The next low isnt as bad as what the models were showing last week, but it will certainly pack a punch on the west coast and southern alps with some very heavy falls.
No real SW chaser after it either maybe a few showers and thats it on Saturday afternoon, and some brief spots of rain on Friday from the west.

Well today was definitly our worse day up here with the storm peaking at about 10am in carterton as we had sleet down at work 100m asl and snow near 200m but it melted quite quickly as i took a drive up Mt Dick was hammering down with snow also went up the rimutakas there was about 1-2cm up there but i would say they might have had more but it had melted abit. Extremly wind to up here today and last night. Cant wait till the next good southerly to come now. Bring it on i say lol

44mm yesterday. A further 12mm today. 56mm from this system. Frequent showers for much of the day up till around 4pm. There is some disagreement in the models for Friday. Some runs showing Southerlies with a period of rain and then some runs showing NW here. If the position of the low takes a slightly different path then could bring southerly rain Friday. See was next couple of runs bring. Looks to be a dry few days ahead though.

Passed through West Melton Sunday morning on the way to the Rakaia gorge and it was hammering down. Was only light to moderate rain when leaving ChCh and eased off further inland until we hit the snowline around 400 metres.
