Yeah but although blue says moderate on the radar it often delivers heavier stuff than what is falling. The drops however are big which the beam seems to pick up on sometimes.melja wrote:Yellow and blue are light to moderate on the rain radar
11am radar shows this over the city with yellow here and blue elsewhere.

Re: Heavy Rain/ Snow South Island 7-9 August
That's interesting Joe,the snow level is far higher than what been forecasted because Springfield must be at least 500-600m .
Radar is not even showing the rainfall rate up this way, seems to be only reaching as far north as Waipara.

No snow at hanmer or even arthurs pass
But the colder air is not here yet but will come when the rain slows as is often the case.

I think so too Richard, heavy wet sleet now mixed in with the heavy showers with a sharp drop in temp also.

Wet on Banks Peninsula, with a little sleet at Hilltop. (about 11.30am) Can't see anything above about 500m. Some surface flooding between Motukarara and Little River, same area that good flooding and slips just over a month ago.

Re: Heavy Rain/ Snow South Island 7-9 August
Still hosing down here in Waddington - it hasn't stopped for over 12 hours - torrential at times. No sign of snow..
What are the chances of it getting down to 300m - and when is it now expected?!

That thick band of cloud off the Canterbury coast about 200-300 km out looks interesting, moving in an SE/E direction towards the coast.May bring the snow level right down tonight?
Reports of sleet turning to snow in Methven now.

Re: Heavy Rain/ Snow South Island 7-9 August
Just got back from our ski trip up to Porters and staying at Castle Hill...had an absolutely FANTASTIC time yesterday...weather up the mountain was suprisingly warm but packed it in last night around 6. Lots of rain/snow most of the night, but nothing settling...Just as we were leaving, though, was a VERY different story. We left Castle Hill around 11:15 or so and ended up having to wait at a checkpoint near Lake Lyndon for about 15 minutes while they helped a bus get unstuck with a grater...turned out to be a Contiki bus. Once we got going, wasn't too bad until we got near the top of the pass...VERY scary going down, let me tell ya...snowed the entire time until we got just outside of Springfield, then it just turned over to all rain rather quickly. Lots of surface flooding, too, even in Darfield proper along the road...can't tell you what is happening now, just what we saw then on the way back.
Will post some photos later!
Cheers,
Glenn

Re: Heavy Rain/ Snow South Island 7-9 August
Just back from a wee drive to Windwhistle (about 400m asl). I also noticed the change from rain to sleet then snow happened very quickly - the thermometer was still reading 5.6°C at the sawmill near Hororata (200m) then dropped rapidly to -0.4°C by the time I stopped.
