Re: Heavy Rain/ Snow South Island 7-9 August
Just had a 3 hour power cut here. Snow has stopped here now but could start up agian soon as its looking dark to the south/southwest. Went up to the top of the Geraldine highway about 420m above sea level would be at least 15cm of snow up there. Peaked at around 10cm of snow in town starting to melt bit now.

Exactly what we found!!Steven Graham wrote:Just back from a wee drive to Windwhistle (about 400m asl). I also noticed the change from rain to sleet then snow happened very quickly - the thermometer was still reading 5.6°C at the sawmill near Hororata (200m) then dropped rapidly to -0.4°C by the time I stopped.
A few photos:
Went through Hororata at 5degrees then suddenly dropped to 2 and snow near the gorge around midday.

33mm here now. Still driving rain. If this band stays over us for another 3 hours could be very interesting!

Yeah its certainly proving to be a fighter! Its only very slowly getting smaller. The 33mm today has ground conditions out there the worst of the winter. Not the biggest rainfall event but due to the ground the surface water is everywhere. Looks to be dry though from tuesday for a good week or so. I think the key thing will be if chain showers form tomorrow with the cooler air, they can deliver more precipitation than rain bands at times for CHCH from short but intense showers.Richard wrote:Yer i'll say,i think there's still a few more hours left in this oneCHCH Weather Chaser wrote:33mm here now. Re: Heavy Rain/ Snow South Island 7-9 August
Its being interesting reading everyone posts through the today with the snow in some places and heavy showers in others.Going by the reports its being a more consistent inland as folks nearer the coast reported to have more heavy interpersonal showers. Here its been a steady rain all day with no let up at all, though not at any stage would you have called it torrential.
Just on 50mm at 5.45.
Like the rest of Canterbury, this place has been absolutely sodden today but great for the coming spring that's just round the corner

Re: Heavy Rain/ Snow South Island 7-9 August
The rain has been light to moderate in my area most of the day, with what looked like it was POSSIBLY a little bit sleet mixed in, but very slight if anything.
Its currently around 5C with S and steady rain continues to fall.

Just been for a drive around nearby areas. The Heathcote is now beginning to burst its bank outside a house on the other side of colombo area. Water is coming up through a sewer in the middle of the road as well. Steady rain, drops arent as big but intensity is still about the same.

Re: Heavy Rain/ Snow South Island 7-9 August
went on a steam train trip to arthur's pass today. snow level looked to be above 600m most of the way but a little snow just north of springfield and along the waimak gorge in the morning. Hit more snow in the same area on the way back and was accumulating on the ground, but stopped just short of springfield again.

Re: Heavy Rain/ Snow South Island 7-9 August
Here in Amberley just short of 60mm, over 60mm in Waipara, 80mm up Cheviot way. I've lost count of how many times we have had a 50mm+ storm total here this winter - the fifth time I think. Monthly totals so far have been May 150mm, June 120mm, July 130mm, now already up to 60mm for August = approx 460mm in 4 months.

Re: Heavy Rain/ Snow South Island 7-9 August
Great photos spwill snow looks a lot thicker there than what it was here. But that is to be expected as Tekapo is over 700m above sea level.

Excellent photos of the snow from everyone. The snow at Tekapo certainly looks deep.

Currently having our heaviest rain of the day so far, and its fair howling in with sleet attached. We are 9m above sea level, so it'll be interesting on the Port Hills tonight

Re: Heavy Rain/ Snow South Island 7-9 August
Looks like probably only another half hour of this rain band for CHCH before maybe some chain showers start kicking in behind the band. 8pm radar shows the band moving much quicker north now. Still driving steady rain. 42mm now.

May = 161mm June = 118mm July = 63mm August = 46.5mm so 388.5mm in the same period. Before this I remember 98mm year to date at half way into May. Big turn around.

Going to be a very dry 4 or 5 months coming up then has to be a long dry period at some stage or the 648mm will be well past.

Re: Heavy Rain/ Snow South Island 7-9 August
and the chain showers are starting to knock on the backdoor now, wonder if we will get any nice hail/sleet showers as this is the coldest part of the air now.
Currently dropped to 4C now.
