Re: Heavy Rain/ Snow South Island 7-9 August
I'm out near Springfield (Waddington) and if there is snow down to low levels then I agree, Springfield is a good place to go get some snow fun
Currently still sunny with cloud here (we're at 300m asl) - will keep you posted

Re: Heavy Rain/ Snow South Island 7-9 August
I think in this systems case there is going to be some advection and land enhancement, so what the models read is not often what we will get after all they are only model outputs.
So generally speaking some areas might recieve 60-70mm rather than the 30-40mm the models pick up, and a good area for this will be mid canterbury especially inland.
The S-SE flow often helps with this advection and is something we often find hard to spot, i think this is what Melja was referring to before.
Anyway a mild morning on 13C with light winds and scrappy mid to upper level cloud, some patchy rain before but the rain wont get going until this evening.
I am still picking 500m tonight and 200-300m tomorrow night.

Southerly change starting to come through here with a bank of low cloud out east temp dropped back to 8 degrees. Areas above 400m around here could see some heavy snow with lighter falls making it into the town.

No rain yet in Waddington, but grey skies are now here and I don't think rain is far off...

Re: Heavy Rain/ Snow South Island 7-9 August
That blue strip of sky is slipping southwards now, and the sky has changed in the last half an hour to a precipitive looking one to the north not far from here.
A few tiny spots of rain just starting to creep in, and a gentle NE breeze.

Nothing in CHCH yet - still nice & dry, & slowly greying over - nothing dramatic on the wind front - will have to wait till after dark - pity 38000 at the rugby !!

Thanks for the photos of the snow spwill.
Looks like it should be mainly dry for tonights game, just the chance of a shower according to gfs.

More than just a shower or two going by the 5pm radar, that rain band is moving down an increasing plus some shower activity building inland from Timaru.NZstorm wrote:Thanks for the photos of the snow spwill.

It will certainly be raining here by kickoff I would say, based on actually looking outside at the sky rather than a computer model

Looks like the low might pull away from the east coast fast.

That would be good! The less rain the better for these parts, still pretty moist underfoot from May/ Junemelja wrote:Looks like the low might pull away from the east coast fast.
