Thats what i thought a few hours ago at 5pm with the radar looking like it was going to clear, but these chain showers seem to develope as they hit land through that channel from birdlings northwards.
Just had another hail shower smaller stones but the hail is accumulating nicly and not melting fast.

Nice gallery of hail and storm pics from Wellington, plus some rather interesting comments about 'snow in Dunedin and Christchurch' in this developing report from Stuff... ;-)

Noticed a gust front coming up from the south today from my desk at work, but once came up toward Bp it broke up.

Westerlies arnt particulary that strong here, shake your hands as violently as you cam envisage and that the sort of wind SW we get here and imagine 5-6 50 year old pine trees spilling out pollen seeds plus needles and sticking on the condensated buckling windows and whistling in gusts o_O
David wrote:Looks like the SW change is arriving in Auckland now, showers have just arrived here, and the wind at the airport is SW 48kph gusting 65kph. No strong winds here yet (still Westerly)

Lightning with audible thunder here at Auckland Airport, southwester gusting 40kts. Not as bad as Wellington earlier with 55kt southerly and thunderstorms nearby!

Sure is picking up here now, gusting up to 53km/h. I often record my highest gusts in a SW flow, still WSW here though. Will be interesting to see if any squalls come through tonight

I see it's still WSW in Grey Lynn too, yet it's SW at the airport, how odd :-k
I want to break my wind record but that won't be happening while the wind is WSW, LOL

It has mainly cleared away here now, could still be the odd shower but very coastal.
Not a bad blast in the end, here are some photos i took of the heavy hail shower around 6:30pm possibly the best we have had in awhile.
Also i was outside just before the full on hail arrived and the S-SW wind got quite strong gusty for a minute or so.

I posted a reply to utterly refute the rubbish that was on there about it snowing in ChCh. It did nothing of the sort. Nothing anyhwere near it. Another example of the lazyness of reporting standards these days

We had a snow shower here in rangiora so i have no problem believing that it snowed up in the hill areas of chch.

What polar blast??

We had a few brief morning showers then cleared quickly.
Severe weather outlook suggesting a low possibility of heavy snow in a southeasterly Monday/Tuesday
