Some dry air here alright, dp of 2°C. If the sky is clear we will have a low overnight despite the wind.

Great photo Richard. We missed the snow here though some farmers east and south of here recked they had snow last night very light though nothing in town. Fine with a strong westerly here today gusting to 70kmph.

Snow had settled to about 280-300m about the Foothills with a very slight dusting at my work around 240m asl.
Looks like a very active strong front coming up the island to the south, abit of lightning being detected from it too.
I expect a simular blast of icy showers tonight but perhaps lasting a tad longer, before clearing to another nice day tomorrow.

That's interesting Jase that the snow line was lower here to the north than what you noticed it on the foothills around Oxford.
This is one thing i don't really understand sometimes is that some Southerly can have a relatively level snowline but where others like last nights can be all over the show,i believe that if its just a cold front sweeping up the country the level will be rather consistent, but its the likes of last nights systemeven though being only a shallow trough are one of those inconsistent level events.

'Wild weather continues' - Taranaki Daily News
Last updated 11:00 22/09/2010

LATEST: A tornado ripped through Oakura this morning bringing down power lines and tearing the roof off a garage. The Oakura fire brigade was called to a property on Surrey Hill Rd after the tornado touched down about 2am. The roof of a double garage was ripped off and flung into neighbouring paddocks, part of it landing 500m up the road. The twister also brought down power lines on State Highway 45 south of the town.

Meanwhile, on the other side of Mt Taranaki, snow began falling about 9.30am. ...
Always a skeptic when tornadoes reported, but watching the news the mention that the roofing of the garage was found half a Km away, would indicate that it may have been picked up and dumped.

Yes, often a lot to do with where precipitaion falls, duration and how heavy. Precipitation developed in the trough as it moved north across Canterbury last night

Sure feels like it, would be good to have a weather station around this time, working at the freezing works we've took a bit of a hit already with the lambing losses.

By the way - just want to thank everyone in here for all their help and support this week. I hope you've found our coverage to be factual and accurate. We're currently running a poll on how we've been - and I'd appreciate your feedback more than anyone. You're a tough crowd to please, but that's how it should be.

Thanks everyone :-)

To see an eye like that, in those latitudes, is both beautiful and frightening. As if anyone need reminding, nature is king.

I can see the flashes from here looking west under a very bright full moon tonight, its the equinox tomorrow too.
Front looks to have arranged itself and is now heading north, sitting over North Otago area.

Oh yeah big hurricanes, like Rita and Katrina got down into the 880s!!

Winds dont wrap around these storms like tropical ones but winds would be well over 200km/h im sure
