Re: General October Weather
Have been to Temuka and Geraldine this afternoon; cool and damp-feeling there, and a smell of the sea at Temuka. A great deal of murk against the foothills visible as we travelled home; general gloom and murk all around despite a nor'west arch of sorts. Deduce, by the quantity of cherry-blossom petals on the grass, that a nor'west breeze has blown at some point this afternoon.

Re: General October Weather
Sunny spells here today, high was 19C, 1C above the average.
A cloudy dry October so far for Auckland and it looks like that general trend will continue, perhaps one or two clear days in the SE flow early next week.

Whats discerning about these types of anticyclones is they just sit in the tasman rolling around.

Yes, lift seems to be there but the instability is very fickle at this point.NZstorm wrote: A bit of a polar trough will sweep the country Sunday into Monday.
Will have to see what the models spit out over the coming days.

Re: General October Weather
Nice mild day today winds stayed generally light, just getting some spotty rain now with some sporadic drops from a shower crossing from the west.
I see MS has a low risk tomorrow, much better on Sunday for thunderstorms for sure.

Re: General October Weather
Rain just began falling from lowish wispy grey cloud that's moved in from the east. Very damp-looking sky for now. Also rained last night, guess from NW. 9.2deg at present and 73% humidity.

Re: General October Weather
Rain had eased off here a little over last hour but now is heavier, coming more from the south, and much more on the southern horizon. Not much wind at the moment.

Re: General October Weather
Steady falls of rain this morning well just before anyway, back to a lighter rain now and wind from the southerly quarter although light.
Interesting MS saying heavy thundery showers today but with only a low risk for Canterbury mainly, other times theres been a low risk they havnt bothered to even mention thunder for us.
Slack though still waiting on tomorrows outlook, much better chance i am going to charge my camera batteries for it.

Re: General October Weather
Southerly has arrived in earnest now with its usual 'boom' in the chimney; dashing the rain against the windows, blowing blossom-petals out of pear tree and tossing small branches around. Temp. 6.9degrees and falling.

Re: General October Weather
Southerly change was short lived here looks like most of the rain is going out across the plains. Just a few spits of rain now and there is blue sky starting to come out. Mangaged to get 3mm of rain from a short heavy shower around 10am.

Re: General October Weather
I dont understand the MS , moderate risk down south in the morning tomorrow but a low risk up here in afternoon how does that work .
Surly the risk would be greater with more heating here beforehand and the fact its very cold air, sometimes you have to push past the model prediction and base it on general weather knowledge of the area.
Either or i think there is a good chance tomorrow.
Wind is now around to the westerly quarter here with rain blowing onto the deck.

I agree Jase why would a mod risk be south of the low risk that early in the dayJasestorm wrote:I dont understand the MS , moderate risk down south in the morning tomorrow but a low risk up here in afternoon how does that work .

I thought today was going to be an ideal day too, even at lunch time it looked so good with a lovely sunny warm morning and a real black sky to the south, but no nothing much came out of it but 5mm of rain

Re: General October Weather
The MS mod risk in the south is with the upper level cold air behind the Front, very cold upper level temps down there tomorrow morning, I see their risk with the Front starts South Canterbury.Jasestorm wrote:I dont understand the MS , moderate risk down south in the morning tomorrow but a low risk up here in afternoon how does that work .
Sunshine /cloud mix here today, max of 18C occured in the morning, fresh Westerlies, any showers were light and isolated.

Re: General October Weather
I can understand. There's not much risk at all really, depending on timing and surface pressure although a forcasted high of 1043hPa in the Tasman Sea could also influence the 'push' in behind with it's ridging making the cold front cause increased unstableness.

Re: General October Weather
Talking about the 'push', I have been keeping an eye on TC late afternoon/this evening. Seems to something there now moving out across the plains. No thunder although the showers look as though they could thunder down at the moment.
