Re: General October Weather
A few claps of thunder here with the heavy showers this morning, also heard in Rangiora too. A few further heavy showers nearer lunchtime and we ended up with almost 20mm for the day. Quite a lot wetter than in Chch.

Re: General October Weather
Had a good sleep-in this morning, never got up until a quarter-past.
Never heard any thunder from here, mind you I was asleep.
If there were any claps, they would be less awakening compared to the ominous rumblings from underneath that have been happening over the last month, here, or so

Re: General October Weather
Had one of those moments because i slept through another one of those NW sheet lightening events on Fri night, early Sat morning.Talking with a farmer at the kids sports who lives 10km north of Culverden and he was saying he was out drilling a paddock at 11.00 - 1.00am trying to get it in before the southerly arrived,he recon it was one of the best horizontal lightening displays he's seen for years.....................snif....and i slept through it
Another typical morning here in NW grand central with a 40- 50km wind blowing could be an interesting day weather wise i hope

Re: General October Weather
Models develop a low just to the north of NZ by Tuesday. Certainly starting to look like some windy wet weather for the north and east of the North Island this week.

Re: General October Weather
Quick look at the models this morning, change to come thru about 1pm, there is the chance of thunder for us, will be costal and fast moving, hail producer storm, thinking it will be a gust front scenario. Colder upper air moves in later in the afternoon.

Re: General October Weather
Nothing on the horizon yet but the wind has dropped.
Would be nice to hear some rumbles from above instead of from below for a change but the likelihood looks very low

Re: General October Weather
Here comes the southerly bringing dust in the distance; the nor'wester seems to have been pushing it away till now, NW was quite strong at times during mid-morning. Temperature was 16.2 half an hour ago, now 13.3deg. Obviously this is just the beginning...

Southerly arrived here about 15 mins ago dropped from 17 degrees back to 10 now. Rain radar looking good for a decent fall of rain.

Re: General October Weather
Can see some very dark clouds way off to the south here in chch central, but still completely calm here and quite nice, around 16 deg, such a shame that it is all about to turn pear shaped.

And 8.8deg. now, blowing light rain. What, by the way, is the difference between drizzle and fine or light rain? Thanks in advance.

Re: General October Weather
I know drizzle is a rain rate of less than 0.5mm of rain per hour. Im not sure what the classifaction of light rain is at a guess id say probably between 0.5mm and 2mm per hour.Orion wrote:And 8.8deg. now, blowing light rain. Re: General October Weather
I call drizzle the stuff when its like mist which comes and goes often but obviously not on a foggy day.We get it in northerly conditions here.
Light rain is that pesky stuff that continues and wets the ground properly and really is rain in effect also often gets heavier to "proper rain",We get these often in a warm front ie in those cold wet southerlies a bit like the one we are going to get.

Re: General October Weather
A gustfront tried to form as it approached the city, but never got its act on. Raining now and very gusty.

Re: General October Weather
Generally speaking, drizzle is precipitation that falls to the ground with droplets less than 0.5mm in diameter (larger drops are considered raindrops).Orion wrote:What, by the way, is the difference between drizzle and fine or light rain?
Light-drizzle has a fall rate to 0.3 mm per hour.
Moderate-drizzle has a fall rate from 0.3 to 0.5 mm per hour.
Heavy-drizzle has a fall rate greater than 0.5 mm per hour.
When precipitation equals or exceeds 1 mm per hour, it's usually rain, although true drizzle falling as heavily as 1.3 mm per hour has been observed.
