My Storm Warning is flashing on my weather-station - anyone aware of a forecast for high winds? - I'm not in a position to check elsewhere at the moment.

Still looking good here for a much higher than average sunshine month, especially looking at the forecast for the next week, we're up to 179.3hrs for the first 19 days of October now. :) the average for Oct looks to be 212.2 hrs.

edit: Also looking at the record for October, its 287 hrs back in 1997 (as Rwood has now pointed out :) ), so we are actually averaging more sunshine hours a day than that year (9.44hrs vs 9.26hrs), so the records a chance.

For the complete record 1922-2009 your mean is 216.8 hrs - record high 287 in 1997. NZ record is 300 at Blenheim, 1969.

Just been woken up to bucketing down rain mixed with tiny hail, so loud on the roof i was waiting for some thunder.
Quite some ommph for a weaker front moving up the island, well weaker than Tuesdays.

Here too, brief hail and heavy rain. Ugly-looking sky to the south-west.

Just a few spots here, not enough to even wet the ground. The dry spring continues!

Before it hit i noticed the lower cloud,as this shower moves north i would say it will become thundery.

Why don't you move out near Manukau Heads? Then you could really get excited about your beloved SWers.

just got back from a school camp on motutapu Island.....I got a ride back last night a day early, as a parent escourt for a student with suspected apendacidice (spelling)?
on the Police Deodora III!
(hydro foil cat!)
now thats one cool boat
handled the 1m rough conditions in the gale SWer no problem!

yesterday morning our group activity of sailing was cancelled due to the wind....I was looking forward to that too...
we were also on the top of the island checking out the WWII gun emplacements when the front hit us at 1:30pm..45 to 50knot gusts we got I estimated :)

re above comparison re the strengths of the SWer over different parts of auckland area:
David is a comparitively long way inland
Michael is right next to the exposed manukau harbour..and so gets the full un sheltered effects of the SWer (in fact will be getting a funnelling effect with the wind blowing along parallel to the landmass of the Clarks Beach through to Karaka area (i.e blowing over the water easier and faster (less friction) than over the land)

In the paper today there is a headline saying Halswell not at risk of flooding. This is due to the change in shape and size of the Halswell river. It is narrower than what it use to be and doesnt flow as well. Luckily since sept 4th quake we have had bugger all rain and looks to be the case for the next week at least as well.

Im not sure you have said that right, "Halswell not at risk of flooding" wouldn't be more at risk if its narrower and doesnt flow as well, also there being alot more water in the river post-quake due to the cahnge in water tables etc?

edit: Sorry I pulled a John Gaul and edited my post in yours instead of hitting quote! :)

From reading that article i dont think we need rain for the river to become a flooding risk, its the liqiudification thats running into the river when the bigger earthquakes happen like the other day seen again.
As we know there is alot of water in the watertables from our record wet winter, even though its dry on top from the NW days its not below.
