Surface Barometer/Surface temperatures seem to be weak for any convection at the moment so any interesting weather over NZ seems to be a bit unlikely at the moment. :(

Yes, looks like staying anticyclonic for a while. Anticyclones don't tend to be good places for convection as the air is subsiding.

Perhaps where you are but not so much here ;)
The more substantial heavy showers started developing off Mt Tongariro / Ruapehu around 3-4 PM and started drifting East. Some developed on the Gisborne ranges.
Radar @ 5 PM for reference:

Thunderstorms are very much possible in a High pressure system just not as likely as NZstorm mentioned why.

But today held the right surface conditions for a storm just wished that the upper level conditions would be a bit more favorable.
Upper level troughing onto the NorthIsland sunday but surface moisture clears out.

First overcast morning here for a week, currently 15C, dewpoint 13C.

As I have pointed out on some earlier occasions, there were quite a number of settled Octobers in the period 1960-1969.

Very warm air here i =n Canterbury today for this time of year. Its 21 degrees already and we havent seen the sun. It should come out pretty soon though and if the wind stays light 25 easily on the cards today im guessing.

And, I think a southerly breeze is just picking up here now, after I've watched the rain-patch on rain-radar dithering around the Rangitata/Timaru region all afternoon. Cooling down too, now 20.5.

I'm thinking with a nice NW today, some high cloud around, and clear to the west, might be chance of a nice sunset this evening, so I'll be heading out and hoping to snap some pics.

You might as well as there is going to be hardly any interesting weather around this Spring, judging by the current La Nina and the weather patterns resulting from it, especially for Canterbury, well, the whole South Island.
Summer dosen't look all that flash either q-

Dont put all your eggs in one basket there John, unless you can see into the future  .
This is just a lull period stuck around some highs and stationary weak low/trough systems, things should change from mid November atleast and in any occasion thunderstorms become more likly.

Anyway it has been a warm one today, sun was out all day at work apart from some areas of high cloud blocking the sun at times.
Also a few spots of light rain but it warmed up more or so in the afternoon when the NWer came in.
Some much needed rain in the coming days, well for surface moisture anyway.

Yes, I agree John is overly pessimistic about the La Nina. It could actually end up being a good summer for convection due to the higher humidities NZ should get.

Interesting thermal contrast modeled for the country Sunday into Monday with cold air over the North Island and milder air over the lower South Island, about a 10C difference at 850mbs.

850mb gfs Sunday pm

Fantastic melja \:D/

A bit of light rain here this morning and the Southerly that was rather strong over night has died out.

Back to a more traditional spring pattern by this time next week with a return of the westerlies, any rain will be welcome after a dry October for many areas, about a third of normal rainfall here for Oct.

Currently sunny in Auckland, 17C, dewpoint 13C.

Yeah another great 21C day here, official high is 22 though - probably from Whenuapai this time - it seems odd they pick the highest reading they can find, instead of being consistent.

Kawerau got the day's high of 24C, almost summer like  wouldn't expect that here until late Nov at least

I think the 22C was at the Airport. The 3 locations they use for Ak temperature ( TV weather) are all on the fringe of Auckland, they should use a central location however the temp difference across Auckland is usually only a couple of celcius.

From the hourly metars Ardmore and Whenuapai got to 22C, Auckland airport 21C.

The Auckland domain could be a good spot for a central Auckland weather station. Albert Park is too overgrown with big trees now. Weather readings started in Albert park in 1853 and ceased about 10 years ago.
