By the way.. why is it that NW ruins Canterbury's potential thunderstorm days? Is it because it's too warm in the upper levels, or too windy for development?

NE (Sea Breeze) provides moisture off the sea for development where as NW air is too dry.

Southerly arrived about an hour ago near Akaroa, soon followed by drizzly rain, then heavier rain and even some hail for a time about noon. Still raining now.

Back up to 22 degrees with light winds. A stunning afternoon! No rain or showers with the change today. The dry weather continues rolling on and on with some grass around the area with no green in them now.

I could see the CU building to the south earlier today, just came over with a wind change to the south and that was all.
Wind is now around to the NE here and quite breezy, 21C with fast deveolping CU forms becoming scattered across the sky now.
Keep watch there could be something later on if another southerly sneaks up with this trough to the south.

The winds have turned WNW here again to my surprise. Hence 24 degrees. Fresher breeze ofcourse though!

Thats odd, quite a keen NE here nearly up to 30kmh at times would have thought it would be reaching your area too but obviously not.
Something is brewing up reasonably fast over Christchurch way, the CU is building quite quickly in some areas.

Christchurch Airport showing a dewpoint of -5C, Timaru 5C, very dry air. Cold upper level trough is moving off the SouthIsland, more cold troughs for Chch south over comming days so a chance for rain for those dry areas.

A humid afternoon in Auckland with dewpoints near 20C, we will really notice the dry air here tomorrow, hopefully not too much high cloud drifting in from Queensland tomorrow.

That WNW youve got never left here at all,in fact its been fair howling through this afternoon, only stopped eased right off this morning like it always does with a NW shower,

Looks like the east of the North Island and Northland were the only places to get some decent temperatures today, Whangarei 27C, Napier 26C for example. Unseasonable cold over the lower half of the South Island with just 8C at Invercargill airport at 3pm!

Pleasant day today compared to the humidity of recent days, high of 27C, wind picked up at lunchtime - were getting gusts 30-40kmh, few branches down off trees in the park, on the road etc, but has since eased off.

Tuesday looks rough with that low crossing the south island, could be a classic storm set up coming for us perhaps?
Maybe a good 20-30mm between monday night and tuesday night.

Very nice David _b

I hope you are right Jase about getting that much rain

Thank goodness that NW has eased off some what overnight, probably down to 10 - 20km though the odd big gust that does roar through about once every hour or so must be getting up around the 70km.
This wind has kept the temps warmer than on the Canterbury plains, i see CHCH is only 4.7C at the moment, where here its 13.3.

Have a great Xmas day everyone and dont drink to much :-k .....................................................nah rip into it \:D/
