Re: General December Weather
Looks to be around 115mm today at Mt cook so far so could double or even triple that by midnight, i hope meridian can spill enough water from those lakes or some big problems are on the way.

Re: General December Weather
5mm of overnight rain here in Westport. Rain stopped around 8am and turned to patchy drizzle (i'd swear i was in CHCH on a low cloud drizzly type day) this is the west coast and there is some drizzle....go figure. Should become heavy tonight though! Possibly torrential!

Thanks for that Jason, very helpful !Jasestorm wrote:The problem with tomorrow will be surface heating, and if any storm activity does develope which it most likly will the activity will be embedded within the very heavy rain as the wind swings gale SW.
So it wont be very photogenic stuff, more i am picking the typical odd occasional clap here and there.
Could be some minor flooding about though with a good 30-40mm possible in some areas, and as we know we havnt had alot of rain latly meaning it will just run off dry soils.
I would have chosen a moderate risk myself for tomorrow, just with the nature of past time low systems which have crossed south of the Peninnsula and deepened.
If I go out I think I'll go somewhere between the Greenpark Huts and Ataahua. Last time I was there on a hot day with a S/SW change, a few vortices were created (with what I consider was a fair weather funnel cloud) just above the settlement as the near-laminar flow of air above the lake was lifted by the proximity of the Peninsula or by the presence of trees around the paddocks. I'd like to be there again to confirm such observation and hopefully get some HD footage of it.
The Earth has music for those who listen.

Re: General December Weather
the fact its a stable air mass is why the wind will be so strong, in the "valve release locations "

Re: General December Weather
A good example is our SW always is stronger in summer given the isobaric difference as the same situation in winter where its only 1/2 the strength.

Re: General December Weather
If they were up to date with Cropp you'd see bigger numbers still. It's already had at least 1700mm this month.

Re: General December Weather
also the stability of the air mass will mean enhanced orographic rain fall
i.e much more rain on the ranges that on the coast (for the west of the SI)
you might have to head inland CHCH Weather Chaser

Re: General December Weather
surely if any event warranted a seperate thread this is one? or am I the only one finding it really hard to follow discussions with the one topic for every weather event?
Anyway, wind really picking up here, gusting to around 60-70km/hr already, no rain yet but doesn't look too far off. Looks as though the areas around Hira and North will get heaps more than us though, only expect around 30mm here tonight.

Re: General December Weather
I agree. I find it fairly frustrating to scroll through a very long thread and I wish we had more topics as it often seems quite mundane.
Here here to a change!!

Re: General December Weather
Well my post is just a general weather one but i do agree, there does need to be a separate thread for what the MS are calling a significant event.
As long as the wind here stays as a straight northerly as it is at the moment i cant see it getting as strong as the MS are saying (120kmh),if it goes more to the NW, yes maybe.
Had a high of 29.5 C this afternoon,now on 27C.

Re: General December Weather
I'd be interested in seeing some lake spilling. Can't find anything about it on meridian's website. Anyone know if it gets confirmed somewhere?

true, but not everyone can start one that anyone actually uses, as I found out last time.TonyT wrote:Anyone can start a new thread anytime...

Re: General December Weather
The weather in my part of the woods over night and this morning is so undramatic its not even worth posting it in the "Active low pressure trough 27th-28th Dec" thread,
Over night was rather breezy at times but has since died with a light rain now falling, still mild enough on 17.8C

Re: General December Weather
The front will clear us by late afternoon but the models have the rain/humidity coming south again early Thursday with decent rain over Northland. Not sure how much precip we'll get in Auckland but possibly not much. Looks like the weather will be clearing on the 31st.

This pattern can stay,a stationary front to the north a day or two with some rain, return to a sunnyish easterly pattern then another good NE may it continue.Drizzle so far today.

Re: General December Weather
Interesting to see Grey Lynn has reached 24.5C, has the sun come out out that way?
Cloudy dull skies have kept the temp to 22C here.
