Clearing conditions for the upper NorthIsland by evening , showers linger around Gisborne, low cloud drizzle develops for eastern SouthIsland moving north but clearing in the far south.

Still looks like Gisborne will be the spot for a new years eve drenching with pm thunder still looking likely. A surface trough with very moist air with lie across the upper North island tomorrow while a broad upper trough crosses the country. Convergence due to a SW change pushing into the NI should trigger a few thunderstorms from about Rotorua across to Gisborne.

Over the South Island the air looks cold enough for some late afternoon/evening convection over east Otago with a few heavy showers on the cards. 700mb temperatures -5C which is quite chilly for December and does look like there will be convergence from onshore winds.
